- Ming captures a powerful source of anti-energy and unleashes an army of monsters from the Nightworld on the Earth.
- Octon detects a powerful source of anti-energy in the Forgotten City in Central Africa, which Ming plans to use to open doorways to other dimensions, enabling him to conquer Earth. Ming orders Octon to dispatch Garax and the Ice Robots to Central Africa to obtain the anti-energy. At Monitor, Dynak informs the Defenders of what is happening, prompting Jedda to ask what Ming could want in Central Africa. In reply, the Phantom tells her about the power source located there and Flash adds that this must be what Ming is after. The Phantom then says they will have to prevent Ming from getting hold of the power source.
In the Forgotten City, Garax and the Ice Robots have found the Black Sphere which is part of the anti-energy source, but have not yet found the Keystone, so Ming (communicating with them via holographic projection) orders them to keep looking and they quickly find it. Back at Monitor, Dynak detects a satellite being launched from Ice Station Earth and Flash, suspecting a connection with the presence of Ming's troops in Central Africa, prepares to head into space to deal with it. Kshin and Zuffy try to stow away on Flash's ship, but Dynak detects their presence and the Phantom removes them from the ship. When Kshin says he and Zuffy want to help, Flash tells them they can be more useful on the ground. Flash then takes off in his ship.
Ming makes contact with Konrak (the leader of the Night Giants, a race of demonic beings that inhabit the Nightworld) saying he will open the doorway to the Nightworld if Konrak promises to eliminate the Defenders, to which Konrak agrees. Shortly after, Garax obtains the Keystone and inserts it into the mechanism which controls the anti-energy device, enabling a doorway to be opened over the Forgotten City. This allows Konrak and two other Night Giants to leave the Nightworld and appear on Earth. The Phantom (who has travelled to the Forgotten City) witnesses this and sends the dog with him (whose presence is never explained) to look for another way into the temple while he takes off in the Skullcopter and goes after the Night Giants.
The Night Giants attack a plane and cause it to crash, but the pilot and co-pilot are able to bail out in time. The Night Giants then head for a nearby city and start destroying everything in their path. The Phantom counterattacks using the Skullcopter, incurring the wrath of the Night Giants, who give chase. Meanwhile, Dynak informs the remaining six Defenders about Ming opening the doorway to the Nightworld, as more such doorways are opened around the world (including at Central City Stadium) and a full-scale invasion of Earth by the Night Giants begins.
Flash reports to his fellow Defenders that Ming's satellite is powering the anti-energy source which is enabling Ming to open the doorways to the Nightworld. Lothar asks Flash if he can take out the satellite before Ming can open any more doorways and Flash replies that he can. However, when Flash gets into position to fire on the satellite, he is ambushed by some of Ming's robo-ships which were lying in wait behind some nearby asteroids. Hit by laser fire, Flash's ship goes spiralling out of control. Fortunately, though the ship is damaged it remains operative and Flash suits up so he can go out into the vacuum of space and repair the thrusters. Having done so, he then prepares to make another attempt to destroy the satellite.
Meanwhile, Dynak reports that two Night Giants are heading for the Central City dam. Seconds later, she intercepts a transmission from Ming which reveals that, as soon as he has no further use for the Night Giants, he will use a transport inverter to send them back to the Nightworld. Mandrake says that if he and his fellow Defenders could get hold of the inverter, they would be able to get rid of the Night Giants themselves. Taking their land vehicles, the six of them (plus Kisa and Zuffy) head for the dam, where Lothar uses a rock to plug a leak the Night Giants have caused, then tells the boys and Zuffy to keep the Night Giants busy. In the meantime, Jedda and Kisa head for the Stadium, where they witness a Night Giant emerging through the doorway, which is being guarded by four Ice Robots. Mandrake and the others arrive at the Stadium shortly after, and Rick, LJ and Jedda distract the Ice Robots while Mandrake, Lothar, Kshin and Zuffy go to retrieve the inverter. However, seconds after Lothar snatches the inverter off the field, a Night Giant appears and picks up Rick's van, with Rick still inside.
The Phantom (who managed to evade the Night Giants and get back to the Forgotten City) contacts his fellow Defenders to let them know he has found a secret entrance to the temple. Mandrake gives the inverter to Jedda, telling her to take it to her father so that the doorways to the Nightworld can be closed at the source. In the meantime, Mandrake and the others rescue Rick, with Mandrake tricking the Night Giant into releasing Rick by creating an illusion of Konrak emerging through the doorway and telling the Night Giant he wants to dispose of Rick himself. Infuriated, the Night Giant turns on Mandrake and the others, who immediately flee the scene. Ming has Octon open a doorway near Monitor, but Flash (having dealt with Ming's robo-ships) destroys the satellite, causing the doorway to close and preventing the opening of any more doorways. However, Ming is unconcerned by this as the Night Giants can still get through the doorways that are already open.
Flash meets up with his fellow Defenders outside Monitor and, Flash having temporarily blinded the Night Giant which comes after them with a laser blast, they head for Africa. In Africa, Jedda and Kisa meet up with the Phantom and the dog, and they make their way to the temple. Outside the temple, the Phantom uses his Ten Tigers power to battle Konrak while Jedda (along with Kisa) enters the temple, where she inserts the inverter into the anti-energy device, only to be seized by two Ice Robots before she can activate the device. Luckily, she is able to use her telepathic powers to get Kisa to activate the device for her and the Night Giants are drawn back into the Nightworld as the doorways close. The other Defenders enter the temple and battle Ming's forces, who quickly retreat. To make sure Ming can't unleash the Night Giants against Earth again, Flash, Lothar and Rick destroy the anti-energy device.
