From Broadway to Hollywood
A Streetcar in Hollywood (2006)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
This twenty-four minute documentary takes a look at the filming of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. We get archival interviews with Elia Kazan and Kim Hunter as well as new interviews with Richard Schickel and Karl Malden. The documentary starts off talking about the issues of getting the film to the screen and how Fox turned down the film before it getting picked up by Warner. From here we learn about the casting and why Jessica Tandy was the only one of the Broadway players not to get the movie. We also learn how Kazan didn't want to do the picture but then we get to the actual filming of the project. While this isn't as in-depth as I'm sure many would like, what we do get is a pretty good look at the making of the film and we get some terrific stories from Malden. The highlight of the film is when he discusses going to the Oscars and having to borrow a suit from the studio. The bit where he asks Humphrey Bogart to watch his jacket was priceless and made me laugh harder than most comedies I watch. Hunter talks about her Oscar win and adds that it did very little for her career. Kazan also talks about why he liked the Broadway version more as well as preferring Jessica Tandy over Leigh.
