Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two

Edit

Continuity

As Parthibendra Pallavan reaches the camp of Adittha Karikalan, his entire face is caked with dust.. Also, his arms and armor, his clothes to some extent, are dusty. This is indicative of the dust plains North of Kodiyakarai in the lush Tanjore delta (capital of the Cholas), the region between the Kadambur fort and Nulambapadi, which Parthiba had traveled. However, his shoes are squeaky clean which is impossible, considering he had been riding his horse the whole time.

Factual errors

In history, there is no evidence of Soman's death as shown in the film. Only the names of Ravidasan, Soman and their two brothers are known as backstabbers in the murder of Aditta Karikalan. Their punishment had included the confiscation of their family's properties.
The Pallava empire, although having had been the first multi-cultural empire of Tamilnadu, ceased to exist during this time line. However, Parthibendra Pallava is addressed as a king here. He could have been a subsidiary king though, as in history many with the name "Pallavarayan" continued to serve as head generals in the Chozha army.

Anachronisms

The Marwari breed of horses were used for shooting this film. In history, the fastest horses in the world were imported from Arabia for warfare in the Chozha cavalry. Laden with natural ports trading with both the West and the East, this was a great advantage to the Chozhas over their rivals.
In the final scene where the next king is crowned, thousands of drummers are present. Entwined in their drums, are many yellow plastic strings which tie them from top to bottom.

Errors in geography

The boat scene where Arunmozhi is taken on a river is shown to be as in Kodiyakarai (near Vedanthangal, Tamilnadu). This was instead shot in the crystal clear, emerald waters of Thailand, near Krabi.

Character error

Aditta Karikala went to warfare at the age of twelve, and the child artist who depicts him looked much older while depicting this.
In the reign of Sundara Chozha, Chozha princes dying was a common event. In fact, only in co-regent Aditta Karikalan's reign, no Chozha prince died after a long time. Sundara Chozha's father Arinjaya, and his siblings Gandarathitha, Rajaditya and Uttamasili, had all died within a few years of the Rastrakuta war at Takkolam. After Sundara Chozha's revival of the Chozha fortunes, along with his cousin Madurantakan, the Chozha lineage had remained safe till Aditta's assassination.

In light of this information, upon hearing the news of Arunmozhi's drowning at sea, the reactions of the kings of Chozha empire (Sundara Chozha and Aditta Karikala) are overly dramatized in the film.
