The movie had to be written, shot and edited in 3 months because director Matt Ryan would lose access to all the equipment used to make it at the end of his senior year of high school. The final cut was completed two days before graduation.
All roles were written specifically for the actors who portrayed them, except Trey. As shooting drew closer and closer, and no actor had yet been cast, director Matt Ryan finally decided to play it himself.
The original ending that was written and filmed involved a complicated fight between Trey, Collin and Trent. During the brawl, Collin comes after Trey with a knife and is then accidentally stabbed himself. Then, a gun toting Trent appears and fires at Trey before being stabbed in the back and killed. In the context of the plot it was supposed to fit into Trey's ever growing "fantasy world" of a movie within a movie. In editing, this ending was deemed too "ridiculous" for the movie and a new one was shot to replace it.
Fake blood was applied and used extensively during the end fight sequence, yet somehow never once appears on screen.
Since the script was being re-written as shooting went on, there are many deleted sequences that could never be worked into the movie because they were written out after already having been shot.
