Having seen the trailer I knew little what to expect. But I sincerely hoped this would be a good movie. And boy it was! This could just be the big surprise in Dutch movie land 2012. An untypical movie for Dutch standards. In style and story telling. It's about two boys, Eppo and Nyke, who find a B movie for their cult-corner movie reviews on youtube. But before they can make their review Nyke decides he wants to change his life and becomes punk/goth while Eppo gets obsessed with the film. And while their friendship is fading away because of this, all kinds of awkward moments emerge. Nyke's mother starts an affair with the local homeless guy, his father marries a Thai post order bride and the goths use his trust to steal beer at the supermarket.
All of this happens in a comic book style with vibrant colors and beautifully framed shots. But what makes it so much fun to look at is that you can see the makers of this film made this movie out of love for the medium of B-movies, weird moments and stylized storytelling. You can literally feel the effort and joy put in to it. Which translates to the screen and adds up to the viewing experience.
I loved this movie and can't wait to see it again. Its an honest movie that dares to be different. It has lots of humor and mixes it with some serious drama but most of all its the story of growing up and all the good and bad things that happen in life.
