John comes into a bus station and tills the ticket attendant that he's coming from burying a friend, and doesn't know where he's going. The attendant gives John a schedule and tells him to take all the time he needs. John sits on a bench, and Dean comes up, identifies John by name and gives him a letter. John reads it and asks where Dean got it, but Dean slips away. John goes to buy a ticket to Lawrence.
Dean is watching John from the balcony, and Bobby joins him and tells him he wasn't supposed to meddle. Looking down, Dean tells Bobby that the letter was meant for John anyway and he just gave it a "nudge". Bobby tells Dean to keep an eye while he gets the cavalry, even though he doesn't know how, and they both say that they'll have one last hunt.
Mary returns home and Samuel is there, and asks if she's going to quit hunting and go to KSU. She tells her father that she hasn't decided, and asks him what he's found out. Samuel says that he found someone who has a lead on the guy the Akrida are afraid of, and the Hunter, Joan Hopkins, knows where the guy is now. Samuel realizes that Mary hasn't told John, and Mary tells her father that they've been busy.
IN the kitchen, John tells Millie about the crystal and how it will only work once. Millie points out that it works than Mary is out of the game, and wonders what that means to John and Mary.
Carlos, Lata, and Ada are in the clubhouse, and they talk about Dean in the photo. Lata warns that the Akrida can open the portal now that the planets are in alignment, and warns that if they can't find Dean then the crystal is their only shot. Ada contemplates the crystal, and then says that it needs a fragment of a human soul. They realize that Ada plans to use her own soul, and Carlos tells her to wait to activate the crystal until they have to. Ada agrees but says that they should find the Queen. Lata says that she's going to stay back and dig into the lore. She figures that there's a way restore Ada's soul and tells Ada that they've got her.
Samuel, Mary, and John go to the bar and meet with Joan. Joan tells them that her family line ended with her a long time ago, which is why Samuel has never heard of her. She says that Dean managed to stay ahead of her for a while, but won't be a problem. She found the partially-open portal and tossed Dean into it, and shows them an old journal she took off of him. When Samuel draws a knife, "Joan" tells them that they're in her world and the rest of the patrons reveal that they're also Akrida possessed. John figures that Joan is the Queen, and Joan says that she knows everything about them. She explains that she was once a Hunter, and just like Mary. Joan isn't interested in hearing Joan talk, and Joan tells him that she's not there to fight, and she wants them all to join forces and get them out of the clubhouse.
Lata hears something break into the clubhouse.
Joan tells the Hunter to join her or join, then snaps her fingers and all the Akrida vanish.
Mary and John go to the attic of the house, while Samuel makes sure all the entrances to the clubhouse are guarded. He goes to look for the portal, while John and Mary dig through the Campbell history. Mary figures there's something about Joan in the family history. Carlos and Ada come in, and tell John and Mary that the Queen is gone and she's taken over the clubhouse.
Jan enters the clubhouse and calls to Lata, saying she's not there to fight. Lata attacks Joan with a silver knife and scratches her face, but Joan grabs Lata's hand and stops her.
Mary finds a book detailing how Joan was born in 1673, and the Hopkins family were hunting before the Campbell. However, Joan wanted out.
Joan tells Lata that she lost her entire family to monsters, and then she realized that Mankind always needed saving and Hunters always paid the price. The saved humans wasted their second chance, and she figures the monsters have it right.
Mary continues reading about how Joan went mad, and decided the monsters were the ones who needed saving, and she decided to wipe out humanity to protect the Hunters. The Men of Letters teamed up with the Hunters to banish Joan from the world.
Lata grabs a scalpel and stabs it into Joan's chest. Joan ignores the blow, erases Lata's protective tattoo, and prepares to inject her with the stingers.
At the house, Carlos suggests that they use the journal to reverse the polarity of the Ostium. They go to the clubhouse to rescue Lata.
At the clubhouse, Lata is already possessed by an Akrida, but it warns that Lata is still fighting it from within. Joan tells Lata that the Men cast a spell to keep the portal closed, but she's going to destroy the spell. She sets the spell sigil it on fire and sigils across the room burn.
John, Mary, and Ada enter the clubhouse and find no one there. They see the burned spells. The possessed Lata comes in and threatens to kill Lata's body, and repeats Joan's offer to them. She says that the Akrida were designed by an angry god designed to wipe out all life in every world in the universe. When the Men cast Joan out, she found the Akrida and gave them purpose. Realizing her party is done, the Akrida prepares to cut Lata's throat if they don't accept Joan's offer.
Ada take out the crystal and activates it. The Akrida is forced out of Lata, who tells the others that the Queen has all of her strength back and will have the portal open by midnight. The group reunite at the garage with Millie, who tells that Samuel found a bunch of Akrida. They've fed the rock to the Ostrium, sending the Akrida back to their world. The group figures that if they feed the Ostrium the journal and trace the sigils in reverse, they'll bring Dean back since he was tied to the journal. The lore says that they can only reverse the polarity at midnight, so they need to buy some time. Lata explains that the Queen got the weaknesses of all the monster essences she absorbed, like silver. She figures they can anger the Queen and distract her until midnight.
Millie and Lata stay behind to use the Ostrium, and as they go John asks to talk to Mary. They go into the garage office and he tells her that she has to stay behind, because she's the best Hunter they have and she'll have to lead Dean into battle. Meanwhile, John and Carlos will fight the Queen and delay her, probably dying in the process. John insists that he's running towards hope, not danger, and if they save the world then Mary is free. Mary wants to tell John something, but he tells her to say it when she sees him again, and they kiss before John goes.
That night at the warehouse, Joan starts to open the portal. John, Samuel, and Carlos arrive and Joan tries to convince them to join her. They refuse, and more Akrida emerge from the shadows and then attack the three Hunters.
At the garage, Lata activates the Ostrium and the Impala appears but not Dean. They figure that Dean is dead, so Mary figures they can use the car itself as a weapon because it's not of Earth. The four women get in and drive to the warehouse.
John fights Joan, who telekinetically blasts him back. The Akrida knocks Samuel and Carlos down and prepare to skewer them with their swords, while Joan tells John that she used all of her power to wipe out the Men, including Henry. The Impala pulls up and Mary tells the other three women to get out or the car. Once they do, Mary drives the Impala ad Joan, who is fighting against John sword to sword. Mary drives past Carlos, Samuel, and the Akrida, and Joan opens a portal and the Impala drives into it. The Akrida drops their swords and run off, and John drops to his knees in grief at Mary's apparent death.
As Samuel and Carlos go to John, the portal opens and the Impala comes and pulls it to a stop. The women arrive, and Dean gets of the Impala. He looks at John, shocked to meet his father face-to-face, then gets Mary out of the passenger side. Mary is shaken but okay.
Dean explains that the Impala kept him and Mary safe, and there's not a lot that can tear him apart because he's already dead. He says that he was stuck in the world between worlds, and he stayed close to the portal, jumped, in and grabbed the wheel. Samuel wonders who Dean is, and he says that he's a Hunter. He died and went to Heaven, then found the Impala waiting for him, and took it around the multiverse. He looked for a family like his own, caught wind of the Akrida, and it turned out they were one of Chuck's last creations. Dean says that Chuck is God, and it's a long story.
Continuing, Dean says that eventually the Akrida would have got to his world, and they would have wiped out his family among others and he couldn't let that happen. He couldn't mess with anything, but he gave things a little nudge by delivering the letter to John. Dean tells them that now that the Akrida are gone, they can choose their own destinies and write their own stories.
Bobby and Jack appear and tell Dean that he can get back to his own stories. Dean says that they're family and goes to join them. Jack says that when he restored things, he wanted Mankind to choose its own fate and that meant no interference from on high, no exceptions. Dean tells Jack that he couldn't let Sam and others die, and he'll accept Jack casting him out of Heaven. Bobby agrees with Dean, and Jack says that there's always another case with Hunters, even in death, and tells Dean to finish what he's started.
Dean goes over to Mary and John, and gives them his father's Hunter Journal. He says that if they're going to stay in the game, the Journal will guide them through it. John takes the Journal, and Dean gives her the revolver and tells her to keep an eye out for a yellow-eyed demon and shoot it.
Mary asks Dean if he ever found a version of his family where they had a shot at a happy ending. He looks at the group and says that he thinks he did. As Dean goes, John asks what his name is and Dean says that his names Is "James Hatfield". He, Jack and Bobby, and the Impala disappear.
Carlos asks what happens next, and Lata says that they go home.
Later at the clubhouse, Lata works out a way for Ada to regain the past of her soul using the latter's plant magic.
Samuel hugs Mary before driving out.
John and Mary go to a movie, and Mary says that when she entered the portal she saw every version of herself. She's going to write her own story, and she's going to find out who she really is away from her hometown. John admits that he was lost when he got back, and he found where he belonged. However, he has to figure out a way to overcome his anger to be the best version of himself, and he wanted Mary to know that. He tells her that there should be no goodbye, and they kiss.
Later at the garage, John, Millie, Lata, and Carlos meet. They're considering a new case, when the service bell rings. John goes to check on it, and finds Mary waiting for him. She tells him that it isn't goodbye, and she doesn't know what she's doing but there might be something for both of them. The others come out and tell John and Mary to send them a postcard. The two get in Mary's car and drive down off. Mary puts on some music recommended in the Journal, and they drive down the road laughing.
