A powerful story.
Sleepin_Dragon25 October 2022
2002, handsome, talented student Joshua Guimond vanishes without a trace, popular, well thought of, he left a party without informing anyone.

Hands down, the best episode from this series, after the previous episode, my hopes were not high, this was a captivating watch.

Was Josh a victim of a serial killer, had he simply stumbled into something bad, or did his activities online lead to his death? You were presented with several tangible different scenarios as to what happened to poor Josh, it felt as though this was the first time this series that we had an evenly balanced case.

I pondered the question, why did he slip away from that party? Surely the most logical theory has to be that he went to meet someone? I tried to put myself in his shoes, I certainly did that.

Powerful testimonies once again, I thought the words from his old girlfriend were quite powerful, she really did speak from the heart.

9/10.

Deadly Encounter
Pequod8816 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a well-constructed narrative and, as always, questions remain. The end of Josh and Katie's dating relationship appears to have coincided with Josh's exploration of his gay/bi nature. Posting on chat rooms using female and male personas introduced Josh to an online community of strangers. Taking the leap from role-play and fantasy to seeking out a real world hook up was a risk that proved deadly.

Was Josh the student running from a parked car to the woods when the "student safety" car pulled up? Did that failed hook up lead to a subsequent meeting with a violent predator? The "washing" of the computer drive may well have been the work of a well-intentioned friend (or parent?) wishing to spare Josh embarrassment. That the hook up was with a student is unlikely, as the murder would have taken place off-campus. Still, that the information on the drive remained hidden for years all but assures that the killer is unlikely to be brought to justice. The police now know the license plate of the car seen on campus at night. The car was located, having been crushed at an auto parts/junk yard. The title and plates would provide the identity of the owner. The location of the crushed car would also be useful. After all this time, only a new offense would likely give the police the ability to take any real action.

It seems likely that Josh hooked up with a violent predator whom he met online. Josh was likely taken to the man's home and killed soon thereafter. Acceptance and tolerance are essential for young people to be open about who they are. The shadowy world of online predators lives on with far more advanced apps (and security?). A tragic loss.

Best episode of the first six from this season

Warning: Spoilers
It feels pacier, there is a very engaging mystery with several investigative lines, it has a great sense of place (a huge campus in rural Minnesota) and as the story goes on new layers are revealed. It even has a very vague but perceptible Twin Peaks S01 atmosphere.

The people being interviewed go one step beyond the usual lachrymose reminiscence remarks because 2 of them are perhaps part of one of the scenarios involving Guimond's disappearance.

As in other episodes (particularly the Buffalo Jim and David Carter ones), expect to be exasperated by some of the flaws in the investigation.

In this case, Guimond's room and COMPUTER are freely accessible for a few days until the investigators discover its hard drive has been wiped. What's discovered years later is surprising. Likewise, campus security doesn't go after a student who jumps out of a car and runs into the woods.

All in all, an interesting mysterious episode with engaging characters and better editing compared to the somewhat glacial pace of some of the previous ones.

This is exactly the type of episode that made this show famous in the first place. A truly mysterious case that actually has the possibility of being solved. It's not that some of the paranormal episodes are not interesting, especially the ufo episode from this season, but those types of episodes can never be solved. Something like this is a powerful story which the audience can become invested in because there is a chance that it can be solved. They wonder if they could know something about what happened.

What I love about unsolved mysteries is that it doesn't glamorize crimes, it shows that the victims were or are real people who deserve justice. This episode has interviews that truly humanize the victim and make the viewer want to know what happened!

Unsolved Mysteries.

Warning: Spoilers
In 2002 Joshua Guimond vanished after a party at St. John's University. Significant search parties came up without a trace.

More like how the show should be... not aliens, ghosts of Bigfoot. I suspected the roommate immediately just on initial impression and the most likely to have run the sweep program on his computer, as anyone else setting foot in there would bring about obvious suspicion. That however doesn't automatically mean he was involved in Joshua's disappearance, though perhaps aware of his nefarious activities. Actually there's no evidence of anything, could be anywhere right now.
