The heady atmosphere of the carnival takes Phryne on a bittersweet trip down memory lane - to the days when she and her sister, Janey, would sneak into the big top, until one night Janey disappeared. - Phryne goes undercover at the circus to investigate the death of Miss Christopher, a magician's assistant and a hermaphrodite. Phryne is now stands at the board while the expert throws knives to numbered sections around her. While examining the disappearing woman trick box, she recalls that watching it as sneaked-in child totally mesmerized her, while kid sister Jane disappeared. The strongman Seth, 'Samson', who let the sisters in, asked for her help to clear colleague Miss Parkes, arrested base on prior record by lazy detective Senior Sergeant Grossmith, and Phryne's her guide into the circus, even cracks the director's strong box. Murdoch Foyle escapes prison as part of a plot with Matthew Tizzard, the son of old Elsie, whom Jack Robinson regularly picks up but likes. They took a tranquilizer -for the circus's former lion act- to appear dead, as to leave in caskets. Tizzard left weights inside it to fool the undertaker. Hugh gets (self-?) shot in the leg, surprised by Tizzard when he escorts Elsie home. Miss Parkes of the circus is freed from blame. The escape party, with a mole, is found out and after an attempt to kidnap and eliminate Phryne is caught to be jailed, only Foyle is reported accidentally cremated alive in his escape casket.—KGF Vissers
