Chain Mace Welding Barbarian
This is another one of my favorite video games of all time, it's also another one of those cult gems as it's had some fan fare over the years, heck it was referenced in the book "Ready Player One" and is one of the authors favorite video games. But most importantly this game is another childhood gem of mine as I've played this game at the arcades, I loved it then and as an adult I still do.
The game is another one of those that get into dark fantasy much like "Castlevania", "Ghouls and Ghosts", and "Dark Souls" which is cool, I always love dark fantasy's it's always a world that is dangerous but fascinating at the same time. Like any video game most of the time came back to get further, have more time to explore more of what it has to offer.
The graphics are good, character animation is solid from enemies which are a good amount and your protagonist which looks slightly unique mainly from that helmet which is sort of a blend of a Viking and Roman Gladiator Helmet, with the two bull horns on the side and the spikes at the middle and back. I really like the background animation which presents a foreboding and dangerous fantasy world, a bit of an odd one when you think about it with the mountainous floating platforms and pipes in places.
The music is solid and slightly memorable, it fits the dark fantasy atmosphere of the game but also has sort of a medevil vibe to it.
The gameplay is good controls are responsive from attacking to platform hopping. I always like wielding that chain mace just the sound it makes and seeing some of the damage it does. Though also while your swinging it you also shoot out daggers. How the heck this guy can do both at the same time is anyone's guess but that's not important, having that function handy really helps in taking out targets above you or at a distance. In a way you can say this give you both offensive and defensive capabilities causing you to attack with a certain amount of precision as certain attacks are effective depending on your range and position.
Boss battles are pretty easy well ok the difficulty on a few comes off a bit cheap which makes this game a bit of a quarter muncher, it is an arcade game after all what are you gonna do. None of them really stand out which I'll admit is one weakness of the game, except the dragons in a level or two, despite the battles with them brief it's still fun taking a dragon down all the same. You could say those segments somewhat predate the "Monster Hunter" series (another franchise Capcom produced).
The real challenge are really the levels themselves which to me are the real star of the game. They're not that hard to get through but they're not that easy. One of the things that make the game memorable is that it has RPG elements which at the time was innovative for an arcade game or any action games in general. This caused you to take your time with the game, though not too much time as the clock is ticking so work fast and use your time wisely. As you venture further in the game your life meter increases slightly; there are jars that contain gold called Zeny for some weird reason, keys to open chests which also contain gold, useful items. However, the chests and sometimes the bottles is booby trapped so open the presents with caution.
There are these wizards that are entrapped in stone and each of them are helpful in different ways from giving you tips, gold, but most importantly a shop where you can purchase armor, potions but also other chain maces to increase your attack strength.
The game is linear but there is a bit of nonlinear elements. In the levels there are arrows that point out pathways, for one it's simply to lead you to the goal but the other just points a different part of the level. Those kinds of pathways work to your advantage because though those you can collect more treasure that you need as you get further. There is even an entrance to a dungeon to go into which is another opportunity to get more treasures that is if you can survive all the way though. I really loved doing these things it gave the game an exploration/side quest element much like in true RPG fashion.
If you're a retro gamer enthusiast, it's another vintage classic to check out. Black Tiger roars with excitement.
