The grounding (or antistatic) straps which are handed out only work if they are actually connected to an electrical ground. Simply wearing such a strap is worthless. Some companies claim to have a wireless grounding strap; however, they have been shown to be ineffective and are considered scams.

Following the initial destruction, someone says that they can't be meteors because there are no impact craters. However the vast majority of meteor don't leave craters; it depends on their size and what they hit. It's quite possible that they could be vaporised on impact or split into very small pieces.
