A man, Earnest, receives a letter from his incarcerated brother Sonny after a recently broken silence between the two-only due to the passing of Earnest's daughter Gracie. In writing this letter, Sonny confronts the gulf between them; in reading it, Earnest is forced to reckon with the fact that he has created it. Gracie, Earnest's daughter and Sonny's nephew, is seen one last time as her memory is recalled in the letter. Some time later, Sonny describes the changes he has gone through over the course of his incarceration. He details the reading he has done and the realizations his newfound knowledge has forced upon himself. His brother, Earnest, sits across from him and receives Sonny's insights. Sonny offers a brief performance of a song and the two embrace.
