The subplot about DeBrie playing Sue Storm in an ultra-cheap Fantastic Four movie made in a few days just to retain the rights is loosely based on fact. The Fantastic Four (1994) was made for an estimated $1.5 million. According to Stan Lee the studio's motive was keeping the rights to the franchise from expiring, and the cast didn't know it was never intended for release.
Filmmaker Josh Trank briefly appears as a process server who serves Tobias (David Cross) with a lawsuit for dressing as The Thing from Fantastic Four and infringing Marvel's trademark. Trank later went on to direct Fantastic Four (2015).
Thomas Robinson, who appears in this episode as Undercover Kid Cop, previously worked with Jason Bateman on the film,The Switch (2010).
Tobias (David Cross)'s last way of tying the bed sheet during his flight to India resembles Portia de Rossi (Lindsay)'s wedding dress.
The low budget Fantastic Four film is shown with the three Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988) characters overlayed.
