The underwater sequence - a key scene in the film - was screened separately as part of
the Pearls exhibition in Museum De Lakenhal (Leiden, The Netherlands) in 2012.
During a pivotal moment in the film a fragment of a composition by
Arcangelo Corelli (Sonata in G Minor, Op. 5, No. 8, Preludio-Largo) played on the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute)
is briefly heard on the soundtrack, as performed by Thomas Triesschijn, a professional classical musician
who plays the male protagonist in the film.
Director Felix van Cleeff encouraged the actors and the cinematographer to improvise in a search for spontaneous, non-scripted moments that felt genuine and free.
