Terrific Look at a Fan of Zombie
Zombie Lover (2011)
**** (out of 4)
Of all the special features on Blue Underground's special edition release of Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE this here might be the best. It's certainly not the longest or the most detailed but we get a 9-minute interview with Guillermo del Toro who directed such films as HELLBOY and PAN'S LABYRINTH. The director is a major fan of the Fulci film and he's here to tell why he loves it so much. He talks about the first time he saw it in a Mexican theater and how he almost felt like he dreamed it because movies like this weren't made. He talks about all of his friends not believing that such a movie existed and then he breaks down some of his favorite scenes, which he gives a spoiler warning on. Of course we have to mention the splinter/eye scene as well as the zombie/shark battle and then the ending on the Brooklyn Bridge. The great thing is seeing how pumped up and excited del Toro is to discuss this film and he can really see his passion pumping out with each and every word he says. It's also very clear that del Toro has a lot of respect for not only the film but for the work of Lucio Fulci in general. He talks about a couple other movies and also compares Fulci's zombies to what George Romero brought to the screen. Fans of the director or the Fulci film are really going to love this featurette.
