The Shah of Iran had acquired seventy-nine F-14 Tomcats to counter an Iraqi aircraft build up. But following the mayhem of the Iranian revolution only twelve Tomcats were serviceable when war broke out with Iraqi in 1980. These twelve planes generated 25 aces.—David Foss
