A Dream Fulfilled

This is the message that I took from this film. The filmmaker fulfilled the dream of making a film in Paris. It's that simple. Lots of clichés - Claire's pied-a-terre apartment, the dark café, country house, the bridges, Dad's black girlfriend (I'm African American), and the quiet between the weak "follow your dreams" dialog made the film seem like a checklist. The character of Julien seemed aloof throughout the entire film.

Sorry, but the actress who played Claire seemed anything but a ballet dancer - and why make her that? Yet, she seemed more French than Julien. The sudden decision at the end of the film seemed unrealistic, not even feasible for someone of her circumstance. Those who do not follow French cinema might enjoy this. The actor had a nice voice.

A twist on a theme of a classic American tail with a Paris locale. This movie was enthralling. There was a simplistic beauty in every shot. I've watched it several times already. On top of the exquisite cinematography throughout the piece, there was superb mise en scene in every shot. Also I really connected with each of the two main characters. You could feel for Julien's plight while at the same time sympathizing with Claire. You don't take sides as much as you revel in each characters journey. I've been to Paris on occasion and this film really captured the essence of this great city. It's inspired me to go back in the near future and I've already planned a trip for later in the spring. I also really enjoyed the score. Every song felt timely and fitting for every scene. The music could stand alone itself, as a piece of art, and in conjunction with the film is a masterpiece.
