- Arthur suspects that an imprisoned spy who betrayed the U.S. may have gotten a Russian asset killed, which leads Annie to a mission to investigate his two daughters, which hits close to home because of her situation with Danielle.
- After a surreal interrogation in CIA prison of major traitor Max Langford, Arthur is convinced he must be behind the recent series of murders on 'assets' in Russia. Jai already has formal competence and budget, but asks Auggie what can kick-start his Special Ops section, then follows suit: luring well-reputed staff. The only way ho could still smuggle out instructions is trough the one move a jail visit chess game with his naive daughter Grace, who runs a nearby stud-farm, while her sister Bebe only visits Grace. Contact with Saudi arms dealer Adrian Al-Rabeeb is observed, but proves irrelevant. Annie must try to win Grace's confidence as 'free lance reporter' for a horse breeding magazine.—KGF Vissers
- Red Square, Moscow: Two men meet in the snow. The one accuses the other of lying to them for years and working with the CIA, and pulls a gun on him.
Washington, D.C: Annie and Danielle are at the annual Marine Corps marathon. Danielle is pleasantly surprised that Annie continued training for it and managed to get time off.
Petersburg, VA. Arthur enters the maximum security unit at a prison to meet with Max Langford, a treasonous former spy. Arthur asks him what he knows. He claims to know nothing, not even that the Russian asset was murdered. Arthur leaves after a short conference. On the way out he calls Joan - he's sure Langford is behind the murder, and wants the DPD on it.
Back in Washington, Annie and Danielle are just about to begin running when Annie is called away. Danielle and Annie each watch sadly as the other leaves.
At Langley, Joan asks Arthur why he suspects Langford. He tells her it's in Langford's nature to ask questions, and he asked none. Joan remarks that it's difficult to accomplish this sort of thing from solitary confinement. Arthur believes Langford is capable, and it will be hard to get him. Joan notes the potential danger to Arthur's career if the op fails.
In the DPD, Joan briefs the team. He has two daughters, Beebe, who has never visited her father, and Grace, who visits him once a week. Beebe runs a gift shop; Grace is a horse vet who moved closer to her father so she could visit him weekly. Annie is assigned to reach out to Grace.
Auggie briefs Annie on her cover - a journalist writing an article for a horse breeding magazine. She complains that the job is making it difficult to repair her relationship with Danielle; Auggie is sympathetic, but remarks that Danielle must know how hard Annie is trying to be a good sister.
Meanwhile, Jai enters his office. His assistant, Emily, tells him that the DPD has complete control of "the Langford mission." He's clearly been kept out of the loop, and wasn't even aware there was a mission in play. His other main appointment for the day has also asked to reschedule, leaving him very frustrated.
Annie drives up to the horse farm. On seeing her, Grace's initial reaction is to rebuff her, refusing point blank to refuse to talk to the press. Annie questions why she'd refuse to give an interview on rescuing former racehorses. Grace immediately changes her mind, thinking Annie was there about "something else." She can't meet now, but schedules a meeting for the next day.
Grace drives away, and Annie follows. Auggie calls, and is curious why she couldn't talk. Annie remarks that Grace seems to have no idea she's being followed. Auggie warns her to be cautious. From a distance, Annie photographs Grace handing a file to a mysterious man who turns out to be a Saudi arms dealer.
Back at the DPD, Joan and Auggie discover the Saudi's identity and discover a connection to the Russians who killed the CIA asset. They believe they have their traitor. They believe the method of conveyance is a game of chess being played one-move-per-visit between Max and Grace. If the code is chess-based, it's too involved to crack easily, and the tech team needs to search Grace's belongings for the key. Joan instructs Annie to use her interview to get Grace away from the buildings.
At the end of her interview, Annie asks to ride a thoroughbred. Grace takes her, while the CIA tech team enters the building. On their ride, Grace notes her belief in the importance of rehabilitation for all. Grace decides to return earlier than Annie expected because she needs to feed the horses. The tech team barely finishes in time. Grace invites Annie to stay for a glass of wine. Barber, head of the tech team, calls in to Auggie to report they didn't find the key, but have plenty of pictures. As Auggie hangs up, Jai comes in and invites Auggie out for drinks.
Back at Grace's house, she explains the situation with her father to Annie. Grace clearly doesn't believe that her father is guilty and is distrustful of the CIA. Annie probes, and Grace thinks he's a patriot. Annie mentions her own complicated relationship with her father. Grace mentions the chess game. While they're talking, Beebe shows up from a trip to Mexico with a gift. Grace introduces Annie to Beebe, who is extremely distrustful. While Grace takes a call, Beebe grills Annie. Annie promises her she's not there to write an article about their father. As Grace walks Annie out, Annie watches Beebe take a picture of the chess board.
Back at the DPD, Annie gives her report to Joan - she suspects Beebe, not Grace. Joan agrees - the file Grace gave to the Saudi arms dealer was about a job offer. Joan says the next step is to turn Grace against Beebe. She has a set of fabricated prison records showing that Beebe lied to Grace and was visiting their father regularly. Annie protests, and eventually refuses, partially because of her own trouble with Danielle. Joan is angry with her.
Annie returns to Danielle's house. Danielle won an award, but is incredibly sore and doesn't plan to run a marathon again. Annie brought ice cream. While the sisters eat, they discuss their father, and the ways he lied. Annie wonders if there was another side to the story. As Annie is leaving, Danielle remarks that it was nice that there was no more need for apologies between them.
Meanwhile, Jai and Auggie have their drinks. Auggie questions Jai's motives for buying him drinks. Jai claims he needs advice - despite the potential autonomy and high-level budget, the OSP is currently useless. Auggie recommends that strength will come in the form of good employees. Jai offers Auggie a job, which Auggie immediately turns down.
At another bar, later, Joan joins Annie and buys her a drink. Joan is there to give her a pep-talk. She claims that Annie's sensitivity is what makes her perfect for the job, and ultimately tells her to do the mission however she wants to.
The next day, Annie reads Grace in. She tells Grace about the fabricated prison records, and says she'd rather use the truth. Grace is skeptical when Annie tells her there are CIA operatives in danger. She wants to talk to her father.
In the prison, Max claims the CIA is lying to Grace, and claims that all members of the intelligence community are evil liars. Grace accuses him of involving Beebe. He denies it, saying that anything Beebe does is her own idea. Grace says he's not telling her anything, and demands the truth. He says he was protecting her. She's upset that he used their game to commit treason. She now believes the CIA.
Annie chases Grace as she runs out. Grace wants nothing further to do with her family or the CIA. Annie insists on giving her a ride, and admits she has no idea how Grace feels. Annie re-emphasizes that there are people, with families, who are being killed. She appeals to Grace's optimism about people and asks her to help. She says all Grace needs to do is tell Beebe that their father is no longer playing chess. Though it's difficult to help them bring in her sister, Grace agrees.
As they drive back to the farm, Grace can't reach Beebe. She eventually leaves a message, including, at the end of it, that she's making banana cream pie. Grace goes to take care of the horses. Auggie checks in, saying no one knows where Beebe is. Annie tells him she doesn't know if Grace will turn on Beebe.
Beebe sneaks up on Annie and pulls a gun on her. She takes her phone and dunks it in the water. She frisks Annie, then walks her out to the barn at gunpoint. Grace finds them and tells Beebe she was supposed to leave - "banana cream pie" was a code. Beebe tells Grace to put Annie's car out of sight. As they walk into the barn, Beebe escalates, eventually firing and nearly missing. Annie disarms her and eventually gets a rope around Beebe's throat.
Grace enters, picks up the gun, and aims it at Annie. Annie tries to talk her down, saying she's not like her family and can walk away. Beebe tries to provoke her, saying that Annie's been lying to her and will arrest her. Annie eventually talks Grace down.
Back at the DPD, Jai has poached Barber and another tech officer. Auggie goes to yell at him. Jai is smug, and says that Auggie was half-right: strength does come from having good employees, but the budget is nice, too.
Joan tells Annie that Beebe is in custody and talking. Annie seems distracted. She tells Joan that's the closest she's ever been to getting shot, and she wants specialized weapons training. Joan approves it. Cut to Annie on a firing range, where she empties a clip and smirks.
