Taking care of the enemies of his reign, tsar Peter deals with his sister (15 year years older than him) and her minions and the death of his mother (Lilli Palmer), while minimizing the power of the Russian orthodox church in government. This threatens his reign, but Peter (Jan Niklas) knows exactly what he's doing to "make Russia great again".
Jan Malmsjö as "the patriarch" is a very imposing looking figure (highly resembling his portrait), and Niklas as Peter (wanting to bring Russia into the modern world, stifled by old traditions) is quite commanding here. Natalya Andrejchenko as Peter's first wife also makes a great impression. Definitely keeping the viewer interested, and indicating the advances that would aide Russia into becoming a super power.
