Venturing Tank
This is another edition for "Under the Radar Video"; The game is another tank shooter which is cool as I feel that's a subgenre in the Shoot Em Up genre barely tackled on. But what makes this unique is that it that it's a maze shooter, which is in the same vein as "Gauntlet" which is also cool as maze shooters are also rarely touched upon.
The graphic presentation is good you have sprites along with bosses that are good/decently detailed each which correlate with the military sci-fi theme of the game. Really like the music where there are some good and even a few memorable tunes that are a good listen but also fit the game's nature on hard sci-fi action.
Most importantly the gameplay is solid, control is basic, you're able to move your tank fluidly. You have two kinds of weapons, one which is the machine laser gun, good news is you can hold down the fire button and it will discharge rapid fire bolts. Another is your laser cannon where you discharge big laser bolts which do heavier damage. But the catch is you can only discharge one bolt at a time; after one discharge you must wait for the cannon to recharge. This only takes seconds, but those seconds make you momentarily vulnerable as there is opposition that is constantly coming at you, so don't stand still and pick your shots with the cannon wisely.
There are some power ups though not many as you really don't need that many in the game. One of them are these option drone devices that constantly rotate. They act as a shield but also you can shoot them and act as deflectors if you need your shots to go in another direction. Another is a dish that you hold that gives you some shielding but not much firepower when still connected. It's only when you discharge the dish that it becomes more useful, as you can discharge your shots in all directions. Also, there's some good boss battles, each of them is kind of easy but each of them is unique. They're almost kind of a puzzle by their nature as each of the bosses must be taken out a certain way.
But what really makes the game other than the action is in the mazes which in a way are the real star of the game. Just like with "Gauntlet" each of the mazes are different in their theme but most of all structure. You have a radar which indicates where each of the targets are located, however this radar doesn't display any specific map of the area you're in, which is part of the challenge. As you venture toward your intended targets you must figure out how to get to them as there are certain turns and pathways you must make to get to the target. And of course, there is taking the targets out which isn't always that easy, as there are always the blockers to take out but also the target has a certain defense to it.
Overall, it's a solid game, not one of my favorite tank shooters and even maze shooters but still fun all the same and for any vintage gamer fans along with the genres, this is a tank game worth a drive and a shot.
Rating: 3 stars.
