- Just as they've started investigating a van hijacking, DCI Banks is asked by his boss, Chief Superintendent Rydell, to track down his wayward daughter Emily who has run off to London in the hopes of becoming a model. Banks has little trouble tracking her down. She had been living with Ruth Walker but had recently left to move in known criminal Barry Clough, someone known for favoring young girls. He manages to get her home, much to her parents relief. DS Cabbot's investigation of the van hijacking leads them to Charlie McKay, someone who has had dealings with the police in the past. When they finally locate him they find him dead, shot through the head. They suspect the van's owner, Tony Grimes, of murdering him but he is acting more afraid of being set free than he is of being in police custody. Just as the police find the body of a young woman beaten to death at a club, Banks learns that Emily Rydell has again gone missing.—garykmcd
