Had a lot of high expectations for Season 2 of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic', having really liked to loved a vast majority of the episodes from Season 1. Generally, Season 2 turned out to be a more than watchable season. It started off brilliantly and ends just as much, but the quality of the episodes after "Lesson Zero" and before the 2-part season finale "A Canterlot Wedding" in my view varied though none of the episodes (even the disappointments) are less than watchable.
"Sisterhooves Social" to me was a wonderful episode. One of Season 2's best episodes and one of the most relatable ones, and one that on first watch made me appreciate my siblings and my the relationships with them more. The moral is one of the season's and show's most important and most relevant ones even today and it was great to have some focus on one of the more likeable Mane 6 characters, more development for Sweetie Belle (who in Season 2 is so much more than the cute and not much more character she appears to be on first glance) and their relationship in a way not seen before.
As always, or it was the case at least at this point of the show's run, the animation is great with a lot of care and meticulousness clearly gone into it. It has vibrancy and atmosphere in the colours with strikingly detailed, big and small, backgrounds. The music is always dynamic with what's going on, is always fitting with the tone of the episode, appeals on the ears and never found it grating.
The writing never felt cheesy or over-worked and is often quite thoughtful and poignant. It always rang true for me too, found it very honest and much of the dialogue resonated with me. "Sisterhooves Social" similarly has one of the best, most relevant, most important, most honest and most identifiable morals of Season 2 and of the show in general. Anybody who has a sister or any sibling(s) and genuinely loves them while having annoyances with them are very likely to relate, the portrayal of siblings is remarkably realistic and hit home with me certainly.
Rarity and Sweetie Belle's bond was paced without being rushed or drawn out and on first watch it made me want to hug my sisters (did so admittedly) and that feeling hasn't diminished on re-watches. The characters' character traits don't come over as one-dimensional (the season mostly did a great job with Rarity and "Sisterhooves Social" is one of the strongest examples), the annoyance is totally understandable.
Yet also the growing amount of respect and understanding made me appreciate all the characters in the episode even more than already. Having been there myself so many times. The learning from mistakes angle is done sincerely and the twist is quite heart-wrenching. Claire Corlett and Tabitha St Germain provide excellent voice acting, St Germain particularly is quite nuanced.
Overall, brilliant and one of the second season's best. 10/10
