- John wakes from a nightmare into the loving arms of his newly pregnant wife, Kelly. He begins his day, like many, with the ritual of his morning cup of coffee. John glides down the hill in Washington Heights, New York City, in tune with his environment. Having to pass the coffee shop, he stops for one to go which causes him to be late. John's tardiness has his boss' back against the wall. John is reprimanded but leaves work victorious with a new coffee maker, the solution. Fast forward, time passes and his addiction progresses. John wakes from a bad dream to find he is living a nightmare. Kelly is full term and has had it. John is dazed, in denial and detached from reality. His ritual has evolved to the bizarre and he is consuming large amounts of coffee hard and fast. His rationale is getting him out earlier, but the sheer volume of coffee is creating physical consequences. After hitting the street, he runs back up, just making it to the bathroom. He stops in the bedroom for an aspirin and opens the closet door to a terrifying situation brought on by his caffeine addiction. In a desperate race for punctuality, he is delayed, which ultimately costs him his job. John labors home defeated to find Kelly packing her bags. Is there any hope at all?—Anonymous
