Joshua Gomez in Chuck (2007)

Plot

Chuck Versus the Curse

Chuck

Edit

Summaries

  • A ruthless agent leads a team of rogue CIA spies intent on framing Chuck for a crime he didn't commit.

Synopsis

  • It wasn't exactly creating a Jane Fonda poster-sized hole in the wall or crawling through 500 yards of s***-smelling foulness that you can't even imagine, but Morgan (Joshua Gomez) and Verbanski broke Casey (Adam Baldwin) out of prison. Verbanski took off on Casey (mainly because Carrie-Anne Moss wasn't needed in this episode), and everybody is back at Castle, where Chuck (Zachary Levi) is wondering who hatched this plot to frame him. With Decker gone, he was afraid of the entire government coming after him. Sure enough, Beckman (Bonita Friedericy) has labelled them traitors and terrorists for killing Decker and stealing the Omen, the computer virus capable of wiping out any database in the world. Beckman advises them over teleconference to stay put, that agents were on the way to get them. Only it was a ruse on Beckman's part; she surreptitiously tapped her finger in Morse code to tell them to run. Chuck and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) head to Orion's cabin while Casey makes plans to contact Beckman on the DL to find out what's going on. Morgan, not being hunted by the government, will wipe any and all files off the computers in Casey's apartment.

Morgan, however, has to wait for Ellie to finish getting ready (and Sarah Lancaster gets one of those slow-mo get dressed sequences Yvonne always gets...and Clara's mom has definitely got it goin' on) for her date night with Devon (Ryan McPartlin). He slips into Casey apartment, only to be on the business end of a shotgun by...Alex? Yup, Alex (Mekenna Melvin) was at her dad's apartment, which is also his apartment. She knew Casey was on the lam, and Morgan tried to explain what he was doing. Only the CIA made it there before he could do anything. Special Agent Robyn Cunnings () and her team searches the apartment but find nothing. Alex pretends she's still with Morgan, and Cunnings leaves her team there to wait for Casey. Chuck is worried about having to run away like his parents did and leave people like Ellie and Awesome in danger, but Sarah reassures him he won't have to do that. Actually, based on the "hostess" at the restaurant where Ellie and Devon have dinner signalling Cunnings they're there, perhaps he does. Ironically, Devon and Ellie talk about what it would be like to live a life of danger like Chuck and Sarah. Ellie thinks it's a good idea to pretend for one night to be spies. She might want to check with Chuck, who thinks he's been hit by the Bartowski Curse and he'll have to leave everyone he loves in order to protect them just like his father did.

SARAH: Chuck, there is no such thing as the Bartowski Curse. You're not going to be like your father. You know why? Because you've got me. You're not going to be alone.

Chuck is able to hack into the CIA database and finds an open file with no lead agent assigned to it. The file indicates a target is being acquired at that very moment. Chuck and Sarah think it's them and they run from the cabin, but the target is actually Ellie and Awesome. Chuck is ready to run...but he needs his pants.

ALEX: Chuck is going on the run and he needs his pants?

That's what Morgan tries to explain to Alex. Chuck and he had a little box marked P.A.N.T.S. (aka Private Artifacts Never To Share) It was a box of their most sacred possessions, which were to be saved if their houses caught on fire.

At the restaurant, Devon gets the big surprise he had planned for Ellie: a bottle of the same 2000 Sangiovese they had at their wedding. Except an agent comes up to him and tells him Project Eagle is in effect, and the limousine is waiting to take them to a safe location. Each of them thinks it's the other playing Spy and go along with it. Oddly to Sarah, nobody was coming to the cabin. However, a email message sent to Chuck to rate their experience at the restaurant clues them in the operatives think Ellie and Devon are the real spies. They can't get through to either of them, and Ellie and Devon get locked into the limousine none the wiser for what was going on.

Casey finds Beckman at this roadside bar, he was walkin' in, she was walkin' out. (turning off Springsteen in the background...). It was a place where they met during their darkest hours. (CASEY: Iran-Contra, Nicaragua, the Clinton years.) She confirms someone in the CIA was trying to destroy Chuck and she was trying to find out who it was. But for now, the government was hunting down the entire family. Which Ellie and Awesome finally figure out when both admit they weren't the ones who thought of the limo. Now they were scared. (ELLIE: What if we open that thing and he shoots us? I've seen that in movies.) Devon suggested they bolt out the windows of the car and do a combat roll to break their fall. Only Ellie's surprise was to go to Agent Provocateur for a nice little outfit underneath her dress...panties optional. They decide to brave it and give it a try. Just one tiny problem: Beckman was able to get to the limo driver/agent and call him off. And now he doesn't know where they are. Which Cunnings doesn't think is right, but the agent is wondering why she's even there. She was actually there to shoot him dead. She eventually finds Ellie and Devon and pretends she's in contact with Chuck. They get in her SUV.

At Casey's, Morgan prepares a boatload of gear to get into Chuck's P.A.N.T.S. (I really need to rephrase that.) As it involved climbing onto the roof, shooting a zip line over to Chuck and Sarah's balcony, going across it, and breaking into their place, Alex opted for a slightly-less complicated approach: she called a report to the police about her crazy stalker boyfriend being right outside their apartment. (MORGAN: That was...diabolical) It works.

Chuck and Sarah rendezvous with Casey and Beckman. They tell them about how Ellie and Awesome were mistaken for them and that the limo driver was shot. Since Ellie and Awesome don't know about the Omen, Beckman thinks Cunnings will try to torture it out of them, but they have no choice but to wait. That doesn't sit well with Chuck, who thinks their fingernails are being ripped out right now. By massage chairs, apparently. Cunnings is still trying to play nice and pretend she's working with Chuck. (She may also be the first person to call Ellie insufferable, and somehow I don't think asking for a bottle of wine qualifies, do you?) Cunnings calls Bartowski and tells him he has three hours to deliver the Omen. Beckman suggests giving them a fake, but Chuck doesn't want to do it. However, Casey and Sarah also agree the weapon is bigger than all of them. Chuck begrudgingly agrees, but he isn't taking it well. He thinks he has to give Cunnings the real virus and he has to do it alone. But she tries to tell him she'll do it his way and go with him but give her time to convince Beckman and Casey it's a better plan. Chuck promises to wait for her to do that. She holds up her end of the bargain, but Chuck has already taken off.

Ellie and Awesome have their wine delivered (it was only a Chardonnay that needed ice), but the agent did find Ellie's phone. And Ellie found an outgoing number on her phone she didn't make, despite the phone claiming there was no service. She knocks out the agent with the bottle of wine and tells Devon they're in a ransom situation. Chuck makes it to the warehouse, only he never brought the virus and wouldn't tell Cunnings where it was until Ellie and Awesome were released. She takes Chuck to them...only they escaped.

CHUCK: I guess you've never met my sister.

Cunnings ties up Chuck and brings out her favorite torture device: The Toy. (CHUCK: Whoah, whoah, really? That's The Toy? I don't think children should be involved with that device in any way, shape, or form.) Cunnings, taking her cues from Mr. Endo in , Cunnings breaks out the jumper cables and old-school battery. Meanwhile, Ellie and Awesome try to escape, only they see Chuck captured. They come up with a plan for Ellie to distract the guard while Awesome knocks out the power to cause a blackout. He uses Ellie's hairpin (now she has sexy hair), and uses his shirt to insulate his hand from the electricity (shirtless Awesome). Sorry guys, Ellie's distraction didn't employ her optional panties, just hitting some pipes very loudly. It didn't distract the guard enough to get him away from Awesome, but remember Devon does throw one mean punch. The lights go out but only long enough for Devon to wind up on the business end of Cunning's gun. (CHUCK: There's usually a backup generator.) As Casey and Sarah head to the warehouse (and Sarah has enough steam coming out of her ears to elect a Pope because of what Chuck did), Cunnings threatens electrolysis on Devon's face ("Not the face!"). Chuck breaks down and says the Omen is just outside of the warehouse, 30 paces from the entrance, in a rose bush. Even Cunnings can't believe Chuck caved like that. Cunnings gets the virus and uploads it, but she was only one part of the mission. She had to clean up Decker's mess, and a lot of powerful people were upset with Chuck. But Chuck tells Cunnings there's a spy in their midst who's going to take all of them down to save her husband.

    CUNNINGS: Your sister? The doctor?

With a little help from Casey and Sarah...yes, actually. The lights go out again, and Casey and Sarah open fire on Cunning's team. Ellie is reunited with Devon and they hug and kiss. Chuck and Sarah? Definitely not so much.

CHUCK: You're upset. I can see you're upset. (everybody leaves) Uh, guys? I'm still tied up. Still down. A little help?

As Ellie and Awesome head home to vow to never pretend to be spies again (no matter how much it turned them on), Morgan gets the call from Chuck that everything is OK. Morgan goes to put Chuck's P.A.N.T.S. back, but Alex is dying to get into them, too. Morgan refuses, but he does offer to show her what's in his P.A.N.T.S. (Hey, they make the acronym, I'm just milking it for all it's worth!) He goes one step further and asks her to take care of the box. Morgan is hoping their night together was sort of like a date, which she denies, but he thanks her anyway. He takes off, and she has to have a look in his P.A.N.T.S. Right on top was a picture of them along with the invitation to Alex's graduation party.

Beckman gets Cunnings into Castle, but she won't crack. Casey brought along a little something to try out: The Toy. She confesses to everything, and all charges were dropped. The virus was still out there, though. Beckman thanks everybody. ("It was a bit like old times, wasn't it.") Everybody is exonerated...except Chuck. He tried to apologize to Sarah because he didn't want to take her down with him and the curse.

SARAH: There is no curse! You are not your father, Chuck! You're not fated to be alone or to hurt anyone. Those things happen because of the choices people make. That you make.

Chuck agrees, but Sarah reminds him if he ever goes out again, she IS a trained assassin.

She forgives him, but something happened to their computers. Cunnings sent the Omen out to take down the Internet. Every computer in the world was now infected, and Chuck was at fault. It was waiting. Although one person didn't have to wait, as the lock to their cell opened up. Judging by the previews, it's Daniel Shaw.
