The Cavalese cable car disaster occurred on 3 February 1998 near the Italian town of Cavalese, when a U.S. military plane cut a cable supporting a gondola of an aerial tramway which led to the death of 20 people.

On February 3rd, 1998 a US Marine Corps jet took off for a routine training mission through the Italian mountains. On the final leg of its flight through a picturesque valley filled with skiers the aircraft's right wing sliced through the supporting cable of a ski gondola filled with tourists, sending it plummeting over 350 feet to earth. While the aircraft made it back to base the 20 gondola passengers perished.
