- {add to what is already listed in the synopsis.} .......Confederate General James Longstreet requests a transfer after Gettysburg. Longstreet is sent to the Western Theater of the war. President Lincoln is disgruntled with General George Meade over his failure to pursue Robert E. Lee's retreating and wearied forces after Gettysburg seeing it as a lost opportunity to end the war quickly. Grant sieges Vicksburg and forces the forts surrender. Grant returns to face Lee in Virginia resulting in many bloody battles of attrition thus feeding Grant's critics.The bloody Battle of Chickamaugua occurs later in the year amidst mutinous problems with various Confederate commanders. Longstreet asks Confederate President Jefferson Davis to relieve Confederate General Braxton Bragg from lead command or the Confederacy will be lost. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. threatens Bragg's life over accusations thrown his way by Bragg. Grant and Sherman make plans to end the war with Grant occupying Lee in Virginia while Sherman uses his controversial scorched earthy tactics to make a sweep through the south in order to break southern morale.
