Badgering

Clarkson's Farm

Summaries

  • Jeremy Clarkson comes face to face with his nemesis: the badger. Jeremy has a health scare.

Synopsis

  • Jeremy likes his cows. But for them to be profitable, they need to produce meat. 2 Heifers have been artificially impregnated. This cost 500 pounds

A month later, Dilwyn conducts ultrasounds on the 2 Heifer cows. But the ultrasound reveals that both Deeny and Pepper, the 2 Heifer cows are not pregnant yet. Dilwyn suggests that Jeremy gets a bull. The timing of impregnation is a lot better with a bull and the amount of semen deposited is a lot higher. The other option is to eat the Heifer, which Jeremy refuses as he gave the Heifers names and everything. To add to the issues, deadly bovine tuberculosis is spreading fast in the area. Cows can get TB from other cows or wildlife such as deer and badgers. Badgers interact with the cows and spread disease, and by law badgers cannot be shot. They are a protected species since late 1980s. If a cow catches TB, it has to be shot

Jeremy calls conservationist Tom to find how many badgers are living on his farm. Tom brought along badger specialist Andy. Soon, they finds many badger holes dug into the ground. The holes cannot be filled in either. If you are caught killing a badger, you can go to prison for 12 months and a 40,000 pounds fine per badger and per sett (the badger holes are called setts) Andy installs some cameras that find evidence of several badgers living on the property.

Jeremy has to spend even more money on protecting his cows from the badgers. Raised the height of the water troughs, electrified the fences nears the setts and installed new feed troughs for the cows (which are not easy for the badgers to access). With winter coming, the cows also need new sheds as the soggy ground cannot take their weight. The shed requires top soil to be removed which Jeremy dumps in an abandoned quarry at the far end of his farm. But Charlie tells him that he needs to fill a waste exemption form declaring that the soil he is depositing in the quarry is free of contamination. There is a soil police.

Jeremy and Kaleb are invited to the British Farming Awards in Birmingham. Jeremy drives there in his Lamborghini. Kaleb is a celebrity at the awards. Vernon Kay hosts the awards. Jeremy and Kaleb are given an award for "Flying the Flag for British Agriculture". Kaleb had missed a bit of land while planting the rape-seeds. Jeremy decides to plant some wildflowers in that piece of land, in a specific pattern

Georgia is a NFU representative. She is running a badger TB mapping program. She says if Jeremy finds a dead badger (from roadkill or natural death), he is supposed to bag it and test it for TB. If TB is found in the cows, it will shut down the entire farm. 150 million pounds were spent on all TB related measures by the Government, just this last year. And it is wiping off farmer's livelihoods and profits Jeremy buys a share in a local brewery and asks them to produce a batch of beer using barley harvested from the Diddly Squat farms. The brewery has created many flavors by using different types of hops to go with the barley.

Jeremy decides to grow potatoes again. This time his idea is to turn them into 16,000 bags of crisps. Projected to generate 13,000 pounds in profit. Jeremy buys a crisp making machine. The machine is installed and Jeremy + Lisa fire it up. Jeremy cuts his thumb down to the bone while slicing the crisps and has to visit a plastic surgeon.

Next, Jeremy finds a road kill badger. He bags it up and brings it in for testing. The badger tests positive for TB. It is likely that all the badgers on the farm have TB. Jeremy finds from his milk suppliers that she has lost 60 cows to TB so far, out of a herd of 120. She is milking only half the herd and the business isn't viable anymore. The cow shed is ready, but the cows are not interested in it. After a lot of persuasion the cows are herded into their new shed. All the cows have to be tested for bovine TB now. Dilwyn tests all the 19 cows. The results will be available in 3 days time.
