Pretty much one fat joke after another....set out west.
A strange and rather cruel forgotten comedy trio from the 1920s were 'Tons of Fun'. Frank "Fatty" Alexander, Hilliard "Fat" Karr, and Kewpie Ross were all 300 pound plus actors who made up the trio and in every movie of theirs that I've seen, there's a long series of fat jokes. Folks back in the day apparently loved this stuff, though when viewed today, the films seem a bit cruel due to all the fat jokes.
"All Out" was directed by Slim Summerville. Although Summerville appeared as a character actor in over 200 films, during the 20s up to 1930, he directed dozens of short comedies.
The film is set out west and a guy sends a letter to a dude ranch, asking them to accommodate his three boys and 'broaden them'. The folks assume these would be little kids and they are shocked when the trio getting off the train are Tons of Fun. Later, the boys go to a skating party where the local school teacher is kidnapped by a local baddie...and the boys come to the rescue. Lots of fat jokes involving breaking wagons and stairs due to their weight, etc. ensue. And, while these jokes are a bit cruel, they also are not all that funny. However, a few did work well and were not so mean-spirited...such as the amazing rope walking scene that you just have to see to believe.
Overall, mildly entertaining but not much more.
