Sex & Nudity

  • Users on servers may have inappropriate outfits.
  • Most of the animals of the game can breed (although not sexually realistic).
  • There are nipples on pigs and udders on cows.
  • When joining other people's worlds, there might be inappropriate builds but it's extremely rare.
  • One of the game's paintings, "The Pool", has rear nudity in its original version, but it is very pixelated in-game.

Violence & Gore

  • May contain fantasy violence
  • The biggest aspect of this game is surviving, and that includes defeating mobs (monsters) and obtaining resources from plants and animals.
  • Hitting enemies is not violent. When an enemy or other creature is hit, they simply flash red to indicate damage and jump back, and when they die, they just lay on their side and vanish in a cloud of smoke, often leaving a useful item behind.
  • The Zombified Piglins have an appearance like that of a more realistic skeleton or zombie, but without blood.
  • You can die from drowning, falling in lava, falling or killed by monsters, but no blood comes out. Although you can hear bones being crushed in the older versions.

Profanity

  • No language appears in-game but players can curse in game chat.
  • In Bedrock Edition, the words damn, hell, and piss are not censored in the chat.
  • Sometimes players can be exposed to strong language in the chat, depending on which version of the game it is. Newer versions of Minecraft do censor swear words with hashtags (e.g. "F*ck" would be displayed as "####")
  • On signs there is a glitch where you can write swear words but it will come out as #### but if another player clicks on it they can see the uncensored message.
  • Some splash text/ yellow text on the home screen you can find what it means on the Minecraft wiki. One of them is "Switches and Ores!" Which is a reference to the meme, "Bitches and Whores". It doesn't show the meaning anywhere on the game, only if you google it.
  • There's no chat filter in the Java Edition, so players can swear, though there is chat reporting.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There is a feature where you can brew potions which can cause different effects, some give you strength, health and also decay or poison but they are not related to drinking or smoking since its like witchcraft.
  • In 1.7, poppies were added in the game, though you can only use them for decoration or make them into dye.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The is a certain mob called a creeper that could explode on the player.
  • When getting close to an underwater structure in survival, a hostile mob will apear in an intention to scare the player. Just search "Elder Guardian Jumpscare" on YouTube.
  • Killing the leader of the illagers causes Bad Omen. And they will invade the village when you are on it.
  • Cave sounds are extremely foreboding, frightening, suspenseful, and creepy.
  • Mods can be added to Minecraft: Java edition which can change the way the game plays. There is certain 18+ mods which can change any of these ratings to severe easily. Mods require 3rd party software to install and take a lot of steps to add to your game so do not worry about accidentally installing one.
  • Hoglins that accidentally travel to the overworld from an open nether portal will turn into zoglins which attack every mob in their radius (except creepers).
  • If a player attacks a wolf, zombie pigman, dolphin, or bee, all of those mobs in the area will become hostile and attack the player back.
  • Phantoms attack players at night if you haven't slept for 3 days, which can cause a jumpscare.
  • Drowneds are underwater zombies that can shoot tridents from a distance underwater at a player (which without armor can kill a player in approximately 2 hits).
  • When in a cave, players could mine straight down falling into lava or a mob spawner room, when mining straight up, lava could flow down or gravel or sand could fall on them causing them to suffocate.
  • The certain disc number 11 when played in a jukebox can be ominous or creepy to younger players but it is very rare unless you are in creative mode.
  • There is an area of the game called the ancient city, a very scary area of the game. It can be found deep underground and is corrupted by a growth called the skulk. If you are too loud, the warden can find you, a very scary creature, and run at you and attempt attack. It also causes the darkness effect, which makes everything look darker than it is.
  • Newcomers of the game will find this game a bit scary but after some time and experience playing it, it's becomes less and less scary.
  • At night, monsters appear in dark/unlit areas and try to kill you. These monsters are not present in Peaceful mode and will not attack you in Creative mode.
  • The soundtracks can make the game feel melancholy or suspenseful, depending on which track is playing.
  • It is possible for the player to enter a dimension called "The Nether", which is dark and filled with monsters and a vast sea of lava. The Nether can be very intense. The Nether pretty obviously symbolizes hell.
  • "Creepers" are the most well-known "mobs" in the game and are legendary for scaring players. In a nutshell, they are monsters that sneak up on you and after they are close enough, they will explode. You are only given a few seconds to escape the blast.
  • If you go in a dark cave and find yourself surrounded by: Zombies, Skeletons and Spiders, you will definitely feel uncomfortable.
  • There is a mob called "Enderman". It has a black body, long limbs and purple eyes. If you look at it's face, it opens its mouth, lets out an unearthly groan and starts to chase you. It's very quick and can even teleport. This mob is a reference to Slenderman, but with a less scary look.
  • Ghasts are known to be scary, because of the sounds they make and they are like flying ghostly octopi.
  • Some splash texts on the home screen make references to horror games or M rated games. You would only understand the references if you looked it up or had contact with the game outside of Minecraft, as it doesn't tell you the reference in-game. Some make references to games like Limbo or Heavy Rain, which are suspense/horror-type games.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A structure called "Abandoned Village" is a village with zombie villagers and damaged houses full of cobwebs. However the zombie villagers usually do not leave their houses when a player is nearby during the day.
  • The wither is a boss more difficult than the enderdragon which in survival can only be spawned with soul sand and wither skeleton skulls. It shoots wither skulls which explode wherever missled near any player or entity. When at half health the wither starts destroying everything.
  • If a player tries using a bed to sleep in the nether or the end, the bed will explode and can possibly kill everything in the radius.
  • There is a mob called the warden that has a frightening visual design. It's mechanics also make it highly threatening as it can kill even well equipped players quickly, making hiding from it one of the only viable strategies.
  • There is a dimension called "The End" with the final boss of Minecraft: the Ender Dragon. (It looks like a dragon version of endermen.)
