- Emma's parents come for a visit, and Mike struggles with his grades while his parents work to get him back on track.
- We open at dance practice. Mercedes (Amber Riley) shows up late and seems unprepared to participate. When she says she's doing her best, Will (Matthew Morrison) tells her that's not good enough anymore: "It's about doing better."
Will makes note of the fact Emma (Jayma Mays) still hasn't introduced him to her parents. She says she wants to take things slowly and doesn't believe him meeting them right now would be a good idea.
Mike's father, Mike Sr. (Keong Sim) brings him to see Figgins (Iqbal Theba). He's upset because Mike got an "Asian F" in chemistry, an A-minus. He thinks Mike should quit Glee and focus on what he feels are more important things. Mike promises to do better and asks for a chemistry tutor.
Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) tells the football team they're dancing in West Side Story to help them work on coordination and IQ.
Mercedes' boyfriend Shane (Lamarcus Tinker) thinks it's a mistake she's being so nice to Rachel (Lea Michele) given they are competing for the lead role in the musical. He tells her she's better. This leads to Mercedes performing "Spotlight," which seems to be her audition for Maria. The directors love it. Rachel seems stunned by how strong Mercedes was.
Mike tells Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) he's not going to audition for the play because of his father. She thinks he should be honest with his father.
Kurt (Chris Colfer) has a significant lead over Brittany (Heather Elizabeth Morris) for president. Brittany and Santana (Naya Rivera) walk by and talk about the mess boys have made since holding public office. With help from most of the female characters, Brittany sings "Run the World."
Beiste and Emma tell Will it's too close to call between Rachel and Mercedes for the role of Maria. The directors tells the girls they will be singing "Out Here on My Own" as kind of a run-off for the part. Rachel tries to hug Mercedes for good luck but she isn't having it.
In the school's dance studio, Mike goes through some steps while debating what to do with his life. He hears his father and Tina, then ultimately decides to audition for the role of Riff, the second male lead, with "Cool." Incidentally "Cool" is sung by Ice & the Jets after Riff's death! (In the movie the song comes after, in the play the song comes before)...Afterwards, he says this is what he loves to do. It can never be a waste of his time.
Shelby (Idina Menzel) tells a carb-loading Beiste she's having trouble getting anybody to join her rival Glee club. Beiste tells Will he should take the bull by the horns with regards to Emma's parents.
Kurt gives Blaine (Darren Criss) flowers as a celebration for his feeling Blaine should be getting the Tony part.
Mercedes gets into it with the rest of the Glee members during another dance practice. She starts to storm off. Will says if she does, she's out of the club. This transitions into a performance of "It's All Over" from Dreamgirls. Afterwards, we see Mercedes all alone on the stage: "It's over," she says.
Mike's mother Julia (Tamlyn Tomita) comes to see him at school. Mike's been skipping his chemistry tutoring. She had to cover for him. Mike tells her e doesn't want to be a lawyer or doctor. Art is what makes him feel alive. She says she just wants him to be himself. She'll help him talk to his father once the musical has been cast. She always wanted to be a dancer. Mike gives her a few lessons.
Rachel and Mercedes have their sing-off. Before they sing, Finn (Cory Monteith) and Shane each give them pep talks. Both sing well, but Rachel seems convinced Mercedes was better.
Rachel go to see Beiste and says she has something "very important to discuss."
Emma is stunned to come home and finds Will has invited her parents over for dinner without her knowledge. She tells him she wasn't ashamed of him. She's ashamed of Rusty (Don Most) and Rose (Valerie Mahaffey), who are "ginger supremacists." They are also pretty negative with respect to Emma's OCD. Will ends up defending her during dinner.
Kurt confronts Rachel about her telling Beiste she wants to run against him for president. She says she's worried she won't have anything special for her senior year since Mercedes may get the lead. Kurt thinks she is choosing her transcript over her friends.
The directors tell Rachel and Mercedes they have decided to double cast the role of Maria. They are adding another week of performances. Each will have the lead for six shows. Mercedes thinks she was better and says the part was only double cast to protect Rachel's feelings. She withdraws her name.
Rachel tells Finn about the way she got Maria. He thinks this means she'll withdraw from student class president. She isn't so sure. He says he isn't sure who he'd vote for.
Prior to going to bed that night, Emma is having an attack of her OCD. Will apologizes for not believing her about meeting her parents. She needs help and gets on her knees to pray. Will gets down there with her to help and This leads into a performance of Coldplay's "Fix You." During the song we see the cast list posted. Rachel and Blaine are the leads. Mike got the part he was looking for; Santana is cast as Anita, the second female lead.
Mercedes goes to see Shelby and says she's interested in being in her choir.
