Warning: Spoilers
Black Cake was a dessert created in Caribbean islands by its British rulers. That reflects the mixing of various cultures. It is is made for celebratory events such as weddings.

It has a meaning of love an affection with the people who it is served to. Black Cake has a symbolic meaning in this first episode. A housekeeper is preparing it and later a man later dying after consuming it.

The series is an adaptation of Charmaine Wilkerson's novel.

After the death of their mother Eleanor Bennett (Chipo Chung) from cancer in the present day. Her estranged children Byron (Ashley Thomas) and Benny (Adrienne Warren) get together for the reading of her will. Only to learn that her mother was not who she claimed to be. They also find out why she was reluctant to talk about her past.

The action moves to 1960s Jamaica. Eleanor was a champion swimmer and surfer. She was also called Covey. Raised by her strict Chinese father, her Jamaican mother had abandoned them. However her father had accumulated gambling debts.

As a result of which she was fixed up to marry a much older crime boss called Little Man Henry. The family her dad was in debt to.

After the first episode. You can get immersed by Covey's story as she made her way from the Caribbean to London. Then there is the mystery of who killed Little Man and whether his family will seek revenge.

There is a danger that at eight episodes it could lull in the middle.
