- A guy puts his unwitting bride-to-be through a series of increasingly bizarre "stress tests" to see if she's worthy of marriage.
- Shortly after Nate proposes to his lover Julia, his friends criticize him for claiming to know if she's "the one." After getting to his head, Nate starts to wonder if Julia's only staying with him because of his money. So at the suggestion of his friends, he puts her through a series of tests to see if she can handle the stress.
The first test involves Nate pretending to be late for a dinner and watching Julia chat with a hired actor playing a rich and good-looking man while catching it all on camera. At first, Nate is satisfied with Julia's refusal of the man's card, but his friends convince him to be doubtful because of her potential "wavering." He then feigns being laid off due to an insider trading accusation. Julia is initially shocked, and this drives Nate even further to use his friends connections to get her temporarily fired. Believing that she is facing homelessness, Julia drives herself to the point of delusions of her and Nate living life on the run as a homeless couple. Nate is temporarily satisfied with the fact that she kept thinking about the two of them together through the delusions. Nate pretends he got his job back, ending his part of the charade, and uses his friends to get Julia her job back.
Nate, however, wants to see how Julia would react in a life or death situation. He gets his friend Kent to dress up as a thief in all black. While in the house, he holds them at gunpoint and demands money. Nate claims to take a bullet for her, but is upset because Julia didn't say the same. This starts a fight which ends with Julia angrily admitting that she would. However, Nate isn't sure that she would, so he takes the charade a step further by pretending he's in a coma, disturbing his friends. One friend poses as a doctor and disrupts Nate's plan, shocking him into opening his eyes during the act. Julia notices and welcomes him back, but he feigns amnesia. During a dinner conversation, Julia tries desperately to bring Nate to remember himself, professing both her love and her uncertainty. Nathan feigns recovery, cheering Julia.
At the wedding, Kent and Ron meet up for the first time and talk about the scheme, unaware that Julia overhead the conversation. Julia berates him in front of the wedding-goers, claiming that she passed the test but he failed. Disappointing both families, he is also later berated by his father, who reminds his son that relationships can be gambles. Nathan is disowned by his fiancee and parents, as well as fired for real. Julia finds the card of the actor who played the rich man, Trent, and calls a depressed and destitute Nate to tell him that they're going out together. However, she sees a man laying out in the street on purpose and runs out of the restaurant, realizing too late that it's Nate. Julia once again berates Nate about true love and abandonment, but only ends up realizing that she abandoned him and that she failed the test. The two awkwardly confess their love again.
The film ends with the pair being married by the ocean.
