Todd jokes with his mother that she will have all the diamonds she can hope for, and then emphasizes his joke by saying "Hope Diamond, get it?" The Hope Diamond is the largest and arguably most famous diamond in the world, housed in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
The villainous cats are named "Jack" and "Nickels," a reference to Jack Nicholson. The cats are voiced by Jim Cummings, who typically imitates Jack Nicholson whenever voicing a villain in a children's cartoon.
Mrs. Sweeney's traps birds in a giant statue of herself holding a pie, with the birds being attracted and sucked into the pie. This is a reference to the English nursery rhyme: "Sing a Song of Sixpence." The nursery rhyme includes the line "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie." In fact, an early scene shows two dozen blackbirds being sucked into the pie.
