In this Lumiere actuality, a group of men and women make their way through a pass in the mountain.
It's clear from looking at this that Chamonix was a tourist resort of the era, and people with money would go there for the beauty of the landscape and the clean mountain. Once they got there, what were they to do. Well, it was the mountains, so they went on hikes up the steep slope, and doubtless went home to boast to their stay-at-home friends of their derring-do.
However, for a bad passage, the women in particularly seemed dressed for a day at the park, rather than anything dangerous. I suspect the guides -- one of whom pops his head out near the camera towards the end of this actuality -- called it that to please their clients.
