The Captains and the Kings Depart
This Lumiere reality, one of a series of shots of the launching of a big ship -- and a ship going down the ways is a fine subject for a movie -- shows the onlookers leaving afterwards. As they make their way away from the event in their finery, they are a bit comical in their caution, moving down and a bit to the left side of the screen.
Several enter from the lower left to pass by the camera and one man pauses briefly to make a comical face at the camera. Most people look at the camera with different expressions -- shy after a wedding, resentful after a funeral. This pulled face is a bit of a payoff given the clumsiness of the attendees' exit. Was this bit staged?
