Interesting throughout
phd_travel3 May 2020
This is an exciting series that has an onward momentum with quite a lot of story to keep things from repeating. Many other kdramas of the past were too long and stalled. But there is so much going on here that the series is quite interesting till the satisfying end. There story comes together. Lots of high powered villains to take down and it's all painstakingly explained so there is no confusion.

The romance isn't the main thing here. No love triangle and all that. The ending is neat. Could have had a bit more romance to finish things. The musical score though repetitive is quite suitable.

As City Hunter Lee Min Ho keeps the character likeable though his hair covers his face too much. Park Min Young is sweet as the bodyguard Kim Na Na and her charm isn't annoying. The supporting characters are quite good too. The tenacious but conflicted prosecutor Kim is convincingly played by Lee Joon Hyuk.

Worth watching.

A pretty decent Korean action melodrama.
cremea11 November 2012
I've been making the rounds here on IMDb offering up reviews of Korean TV shows over the last year or so (because they're sorely lacking), and tonight it's review time for City Hunter. This show aired in the summer of 2011, and it's not half bad.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

I see four other people have reviewed this series already (to some wildly ranging opinions). I watch these shows all the time, and have a pretty good handle on them, so perhaps I can be of some help in providing a more balanced review. Basically, this show is standard fare for the genre; it's neither ground breaking nor spectacular, but it is mostly watchable and worth checking out if you like this sort of thing. It's pretty decent overall.

Here's your story: It's late 1980's or early 1990's, and North and South Korean tensions are mounting. A group of hardened South Korean marines are tasked with infiltrating the North to kill a number of prominent military leaders at the behest of 5 South cabinet members and high ranking officials. During the raid, the 5 South leaders who masterminded the plan reverse course for political reasons, but it's too late to stop the mission. As a result, they must now eliminate the team they sent north without a trace, and they must do so at all costs in order to preserve national security and peace between the 2 nations.

The South Korean leaders appear to be successful in eliminating their own marines. One member of the team survives the onslaught however, thanks to his long time friend in the squad who saved his life. Obliged to fulfill the wishes of his dying friend, and fearing that his friend's entire family may also be killed, he absconds with his friend's newborn son and goes on the run. This surviving team member is upset (to say the least), and he's not a man to be trifled with. He disappears into the Golden Triangle where he raises his friend's son while he rises to power & wealth in the drug supply trade. All the while, he plots eventual revenge on the 5 leaders back in Korea who killed his comrades in the past, and, he plans on one day using his "adopted" son to help him accomplish this goal. As such, the adopted son is essentially groomed from birth to carry out this plan in the future.

Flash forward to 2010 or so. The son he raised is now fully grown and inserted back into Korea. He's rich, well educated, good looking, and armed with all the training he needs to ruthlessly take revenge on the people who caused the death of his father. The 5 men he must dispatch have since risen to great power and are now well entrenched politically and financially, and one of them is now the South Korean President. Undaunted, father and adopted son set about their task to eliminate these evildoers one by one.

Some problems arise though; the son is not the ruthlessly driven killer his adopted father is, and he starts to question and waiver on the task at hand over time. He also takes a liking to a pretty young girl along the way, who turns out to be an up and coming secret service agent in charge of protecting the president (i.e. the main target). Ahhhh!...this is a staple of KTV melodrama...everybody is somehow involved with somebody else, and all story lines & plot points intertwine & intersect with one another somehow. And every character is a rival to someone else; old against new, weak against powerful, good against evil, father against son, son against love interest, etc. How will this particular show play out these themes in the end?...Watch and see for yourself!

There's a god bit to like about this show. It's often quite entertaining and fairly interesting, but it does get bogged down a little bit during its run time. It would have benefited from trimming its 20 show format down to about 12-16 episodes or so, but, I've been over this same ground too many times with other similar shows I've watched & reviewed; it's just the nature of airing KTV dramas, and, you're just going to have to get used to it if you endeavor to watch them.

Bottom Line: I liked it for the most part, and it's certainly watchable. It is not deserving of its current lofty 8.4 rating, nor its two glowing 10 star ratings from the previous reviewers. But it's certainly not a 3 star rated pile of crap either. It's worth checking out if you have 20 hours to kill and are looking for a Korean style love story/melodrama fix with a decent enough amount of action & intrigue.

7 out of 10 stars!

Action-packed excitement!
nira_jaga9 July 2012
Although this show might have started off slow and boring for me by the end I was gripping on to my seat in nerve-wracking anticipation. The action was authentic and the characters completely lovable. I would like to have seen more romance between the lead couple but their chemistry either way was evident. The plot had a few loose ends and I hated the ending which left me feeling unfulfilled, but I'll forgive the makers on the grounds that I loved the series as a whole. I would definitely recommend watching this to anyone who loves the good looking hero with a hidden identity trying to save the world and protect his lady love, etc etc.

An engaging, heart-pounding drama that takes you on a roller-coaster ride
dizzy_bubbles_8624 May 2012
I first heard about City Hunter well before it was to be aired. I had set it aside to watch, mainly because I'd recently become a fan of Lee Min Ho (main male lead) via his previous dramas. Unfortunately, it took me a whole year before I finally sat down and watched this truly amazing drama.

I was captured from the very first episode, where you witness the deaths of 20 Korean soldiers, betrayed by their own country. The musical score used to draw you into that whole scene is just...beautiful, and heart- breaking. It plays throughout the series, perfectly placed, perfectly timed.

I began to love each of the characters and watch them progress, some of them more than others. The relationship between Lee Yoon Sung and his father is one of the core aspects of the drama. I tell you now, if you have not seen this drama, go and watch it. You will not be disappointed. I felt that it got a solid ending that wrapped up all the loose ends in the plot, and even with the romance. It left me wanting more..in a good way XD I would totally go for a second season, if the original cast remained :p

From the astounding musical cores, the lovable characters, and engaging plot, I highly recommend this drama.

Absolutely brilliant!

My favorite K-Drama. It has everything: A revenge plot, slow burn romance, humor, an amazing OST, great action scenes and mind-blowing plot twists. Really great acting, as well and Lee Joon Hyuk is to die for. I've seen it twice now and both times I was laughing out loud, squealing, screaming (I'm not kidding, ask my neighbours) and crying. It's a wild ride, an absolute emotional rollercoaster and you get so attached to the characters. Also, Lee Minho and Lee Joon Hyuk's chemistry is amazing. Their relationship is the best among all the characters.

My favorite Korean drama so far
mcmugged28 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have always been a huge fan of movies or TV series such as Zorro, Superman, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. City Hunter has the same elements that I love in these other stories--a good looking man as the star, who has a secret identity and even wears a mask at times. He uses his wits to foil the bad guys and he is very skilled at fighting. He tries to help the innocent victims and ruin the evil guys without killing them.

Usually, an episode ends on a cliffhanger, but with Netflix you don't have to wait to see what happens next.

The first episode was not my most liked, but I stuck it out because the star, Lee Min Ho is my favorite Korean actor. I love everything he has been in that I have seen so far.

This Korean drama is the one I prefer most, now that I have seen at least 23 entire dramas. They typically are 16-24--sometimes more--episodes each. Each episode is usually just over an hour, with no commercials (on Netflix). Each series is a complete story that ends when it is complete. I also like that it isn't R rated. I would definitely say it was PG 13. Not sure what the standards are in South Korea for rating shows.

The only complaint I have is that you have to be a fast reader to read the subtitles before they disappear. I think the English subtitles are transcribed by volunteers and you occasionally see grammar mistakes, but it is still worth it to see this show.

Good in many ways
Cloud-Shine9 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The music, action scenes, characters, everything were really good. But one thing was boring, the secret of the main character's father. It wasn't really interesting to put 3 fathers in the series and at last show us the third one that is the last character's enemy. I didn't like this long journey to find out who he is.

The best of Lee Min Ho
madbird-6124317 January 2019
In term of the look and age of Lee, this drama shows the best of him. Young, smart and handsome. With tbe female lead, they also create chemistry. The storyline of the first half is intricated yet logical. Towards the end, unfortunately, the story become a bit loose. Or it will be a really classic action and romance drama.

Been selecting the past Korean Drama to watch from the old kungfu series to new modern era.Trying a few numbers actually from the old era till the new era to be specific More like something decent to watch.

Well I landed this one instead. Yokoosso well two thumbs up. The character for Kim Na Na is just fabulous and just fits the bill. Great mixture of romance and action in the drama it is definitely not typical Korean love story per say.

Most importantly it is a family safe to watch drama if of course one notion that you disregard the amount of fighting violence in a show .. than this show is a definite recommendation.

Hm....
smonster007 April 2021
I'm more of a film person, and even if I saw a couple of great serials from South - Korea, this isn't one of them. There are just too many small technical and practical mistakes in it that it ruins the immersion for me.

Even though Korea is high-tech and all they don't seem to know how smartphones work in this serial. Sure, there are some other dramas that have the same issue, however, it's all the small issues like how fire arms work for example.

They are supposed to protect high-level people yet they put themselves and others in serious danger by not knowing how guns work.

I'm not from the USA yet even I know about the safety of guns by getting a random YouTube recommendation years ago.

The ending is also very very very rushed and there is bad closure, it really ruins it and it seems that when they were making this they kinda didn't know what to do cos of all the pressure the film crew were probably under, or maybe, dramas are just not for me.

Trash
grandmastersik16 January 2017
Korea has given us some amazing films over the past 15-20 years, and being a big fan of their action-thrillers, I decided to check out their TV programmes... Wow, are they bad.

The first thing noticed with Korea TV shows is that they all look cheap and quickly made. Yes, there is crane and dolly work, and they seem to frown on the detestable shaky-cam that plagues Western TV nowadays, but it's as if somebody said, "Hey, I have a 4K camera, let's make a TV programme," and to hell with aesthetics.

The second thing - which is also quickly noticed - is how bad the dialogue is. Films are seemingly honed to near perfection, whereas dialogue in Korean TV programmes (or, at least, in the handful I've tried to watch), meanders, repeats itself and is plain corny.

City Hunter, unfortunately, isn't an exception to the above. I got one and a half episodes in before I had to question why I was subjecting myself to such nonsense!

The plot plays out like a teenage melodrama disguised as an action-thriller, but ridiculous coincidences, bad characters, slow pacing and action sequences massively below the level I was expecting (not to mention how infrequently their occur), soon nailed its coffin shut. There's also the tiny factor of complete implausibility, as some kid who was effectively raised in the jungle somewhere near Cambodia, is speaking with modern Korean dialect and accent, and posing as an American computer genius... despite not being able to speak a word of English or having ever seen a computer!

Oh, and working for and interacting directly with the Korean president is a given, when you have a fake degree from MIT.

So, if you're a fan of Korean TV already (not that I can fathom why), you may be able to overlook all the stupidity and badness and enjoy the tall lead with his spiffy hair, or the admittedly gorgeous character of Kim Na Na, regardless of how preachy and imposing she acts, but for those who love Korean cinema and are looking to give their TV a go, look elsewhere (and I hope that you find higher quality programmes than all the "recommended" ones that I did).

My favorite K drama
sungbin23 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of my favorite K dramas. I can say there was only maybe 1/2 of an episode where I felt it was dragging but I thoroughly enjoyed every episode. Most K dramas have plots that are not realistic or complicated love stories where either the man or woman refuses to admit their love. I liked that this drama had a love story that was realistic. I liked how they both were up front about their feelings but due to a psychotic dad, they couldn't be together which I found refreshing and realistic.

I loved all the action scenes and although some people might have been disappointed about the ending, I loved it. I thought it was very realistic.

I've seen many Korean dramas, and this one is on the top of my list. I'll make this short, and I know I sound cheesy saying this was a 10 out of 10, but I truly think that this deserves this rating. I love action with a bit of romance, so this drama was perfect for me. Hope you can watch it soon!

Over the top action with an intricate back story
leahcubed27 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Lee Yoon-Sung (Lee Min-Ho) was raised to seek revenge for his father who was killed by his own country men upon the order of five high ranking officials. His adopted father, who was the only surviving member of the elite troup that was targeted by the officials, raises Yoon-Sung as a key player in his revenge plot. As part of that plan Yoon-Sung attends an elite United State technological institute and excels enough to be hired as a telecommunications expert at the Blue House in South Korea. Yoon-Sung encounters Kim Na-Na (Park Min-Young), at the Blue House where she works as a body guard. His adopted father warned him to never fall in love as his "mission" would involve a lot of blood shed in his adopted father's mind. Yoon-Sung has his own way of doing things though.

I really liked the action in this movie. City Hunter reminded me of Batman maybe or James Bond. His character was extremely well developed and you understood his motivation in the things that he did. The romance between him and Kim Na-Na character was sizzling but very tragic. My heart broke for both so many times throughout I nearly lost count. I read that Lee Min-Ho does his own stunts and that made his performance as an actor all the more amazing. Everyone in this drama acted very well and the characters were well developed and evolved as you would expect based on the happenings. I read that the romance was left up in the air and some even wondered if City Hunter was still alive or if she was seeing a ghost. That would have bothered me if he would have died but I read a summary of that final episode from the producer/writers and they said he was not a ghost. So the ending is not sad the romance just doesn't wrap up in a happily ever after. You have to decide, for yourself, if them seeing each other a year after the final big action - if that means they will be together or not. So if you are in it for the romance you might be disappointed by that. I think it is still more than worth it to watch it for the suspense and action.

Watch it for the thrill, the emotions and the father-son relationship!
princessifi4 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I was in two minds on whether to watch City Hunter or not, so I decided that I would take a call after seeing the first episode. 30 minutes into the first episode and I already had goosebumps. I just completed watching the entire series and I cannot not review it.

City Hunter definitely is a very good show. The revenge plot is so extremely justified that as a viewer you actually squeal when the culprits are taken down one by one. But the fact is it does leave you wanting for more, it gives you the feeling that the end could have been better, and that is exactly why it doesn't become outstanding! Then again that doesn't mean its ending was bad. Yoon Sung knew his father loved him, yet there were times he doubted it. In the end though, that father, whom he thought did not love him after all, did make his last attempt to save his son.

The scene when Lee Jin Pyo falls on the ground after being shot and holds Yoon sung's hand..They had their differences, they had their own ways of taking revenge, but the fact remains that they succeeded because they both worked on it together.

The relationship between a father and a son who are not even blood related was depicted in an absolutely intriguing manner- They couldn't stay with each other nor without. For me, Lee Jin Pyo will always be Yoon Sung's real father. Whatever be his motive, Yoon Sung was precious to him.

It would have been so much better had Kim Young Joo been there till the end. His last words were that of Prosecutor Young jo and not Young Jo. For some one who devoted his entire life for the justice of the country, such a brutal death was heart breaking. He should have had at least unsolved the mystery of operation clean sweep before dying.

Kim Na Na seemed like more of a side character towards the end. I wish that had not happened given the fact that she really had some awesome chemistry with Lee Min Ho.

Lee Jin Pyu always knew how this was going to end, but he ensured his son got the happiness he always craved for. Only if he had understood long ago that in the happy world that Yoon sung dreamt of, he wanted his father too. Then again, I am so glad Lee Jin Pyo killed 3 of them :3

And finally, Yoon Sung the city hunter- Lee Min Ho was absolutely worth watching through out the show. His outstanding action skills were simply justified by the fact that he lived 28 years of his life learning them from a father, who appeared to be heartless from the outside. He loved his father, and in the entire show there was this one dialogue that made me fall in love with him-

"I will protect the ones who are precious to me and that includes you father." And he did stand by this statement till the end. He couldn't kill Lee Jin Pyo- he loved his father after all, so he decided to kill himself instead. The last scene leaves you teary eyed and shaken.

Only if there was a way for Lee Jin Pyo and Yoon sung to have a happy ending.

Watch this show for father-son relationship. Watch this show for the thrill and the emotions. It is worth it.

I must admin that I love how the heroes in k dramas are not killers in the name of revenge- Healer, k2 and now City Hunter. Blood for blood isn't always revenge. It is a never ending curse!

Why the hell don't they finish the drama properly after watching 20 long episodes??? It was all set very well. One of the most fantastic Korean Series, I must admit. But what did the conclusion mean, it should have been well clarified! Thus I cut off 2 stars for just last 3 minutes of the drama.

Minmin couple the most perfect and matching
khwongpj1 February 2017
Only discovered City Hunter drama in last year 2016 after I started watching Heirs and Personal Taste which lead me to search for another drama under Lee Min Ho. After watching almost all drama acted by Lee Min Ho ,City Hunter is the best drama and i like it the most. Not only the story line is interesting but both the lead actors (Lee Min HO and Park Min Young) is the most matching and perfect couple which make the drama so interesting. But the ending part of the story is not satisfying because is a puzzle to the audience whether is Kim Na Na and Lee Yoon Sang will together happily ever after. Their chemistry is really good. I started to fall in love with this minmin couples. But i know is too late because now they have separated. I felt so sad to read about they broke up. I sincerely hope that in one fine day, Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young will get back together again. They are really so matching together among all Lee Min Ho co-star that he has worked together. Love to see both so playful and laugh together so happily.

Starts out OK but really slows down after first 3 episodes.
Windsun337 May 2012
Unfortunately, this series starts out fairly well, but then about 1/3 of the way through it really starts going downhill.

If the series had stuck to the main plot and characters it would have been OK, but the introduction of never-resolved subplots, and totally extraneous characters ended up spoiling it for me. For example, far too much time was spent on the totally air-headed presidents daughter, who added nothing at all to the story, and is left at a dead end. Flashbacks were way overdone - it seemed like the object was to fill up space rather than advance the plot.

In general, the main plot and most subplots are so full of holes and unresolved issues that have to wonder if 3 hours or so was assembled from outtakes to fill the alloted number of episodes.

If you are a Korean Drama fan, "Lie to Me" and "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" are much better choices.

The series started out like "The Dirty Dozen" and ended like the purple dinosaur "Barney Goes to School" video.

Brilliant!
Aries_Primal18 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I started this show with mixed feelings, and at the beginning I have to admit everything seemed similar in episodes, but it touched me. The story is multilayered, somehow real no matter there was some "mistakes, as the plastic guns, how fast a wound from gunshot is healing without even a scar, same five songs or the flood of memories which repeated four times when Nana and Yoon Sung split. Anyway I have to say I couldn't stop thinking "what will happen next" in the break between episodes. Every character in this film has his own story and you like it or hate it, but there are no moments where something is missing and you wonder "why happened this way and not that way"? I hated to see how Jin Pyo was torturing his own "son" and the revealing the truth at the end was completely unexpected, their actions and decisions too. I voted with 9 because this film left me with mixed feelings as I said - about every one character I loved and hated at the same time. You created a story with deep meaning and personal fight for every single one of them. You have my regards! It was a pleasure to watch!

City Hunter wrapped with a whimper not a bang and that's a shame...
fprefect-685-28108427 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
City Hunter had focused, intricate episodes with many surprises in the series. This series was billed as a prequel to the Japanese City Hunter manga series written and illustrated by Tsukasa Hojo.

City Hunter was a tale of revenge with key bromances as the linchpins for the series: Dad (Lee Jin-pyo) and City Hunter (Lee Min-ho), City Hunter and Prosecutor (Kim Young-joo), City Hunter and the sidekick (Bae Shik-joong). City Hunter stalked, trapped, and turned over men that had done Dad wrong many years ago. The revenge was satisfying for targets 1- 3, but the death of target 4 was too long in coming and didn't seem enough after brutal death of the prosecutor, the impeachment of the President seemed like a slap on the wrist, his term was almost up.

The romance between City Hunter and Kim Na Na built steadily then was iced by the City Hunter so he could focus on the final targets and revenge. This left the City Hunter alone and the story weaker by him not relying on Kim Na Na and Bae Shik-joong his sidekick (both characters were effectively neutered for the remainder of the series).

City Hunter had well written episodes that completely hooked me but the pacing, the writing and wrap-up decisions of last 2 episodes bothered me and downgraded my overall feelings of the series to "missed it by that much" (very good but not great). The series wrapped with a whimper not a bang. The epilogue scenes were ambiguous and left me saying - that's it? Problems with the final two episodes:

1. The final target, the President, was weak and anti-climactic. All the other targets had done dastardly things for greed and power. The Presidents' misdeeds did not have any impact. The President was neither villain nor hero, but rather blah and non-descript. If a villain isn't compelling it drags the story down. The story the President told of stealing lunch money and not being able to admit the wrong doing when confronted, seemed to repeat itself.

2. The reveal that the President was City Hunter's biological father was a non-event. This should have strongly rippled and impacted the characters – but no, it didn't.

3. Having target #4 (Chun Jae-man) escape (who was the inside man that did that?) after City Hunter delivered him to the Prosecutor Kim Young- joo was annoying. Revenge on target #4 took too long and consumed too much of the series energy.

4. Killing the prosecutor Kim Young-joo was unnecessary and harsh. It seemed to leave a shell-shocked pall on all the characters in the finale episode. The out-side-the-law City Hunter needs his sworn-to- uphold- the-law counterpart Prosecutor (e.g. Batman and Commissioner Gordon).

5. The epilogue was short and ambiguous, leaving a negative last impression of the series. Why did the mother and Bae Shik-joong move to America? Did City Hunter and Kim Na Na get together? Throughout the series City Hunter stated he wanted to be able to achieve a normal life after the revenge was complete – did he? The City Hunter said that he'd come back to Kim Na Na and Kim Na Na said she'd wait for him. Did City Hunter continue as a vigilante with Kim Na Na waiting at home with dinner for him? If so, was his father's sacrifice, declaring himself City Hunter, wasted?

One of the best Korean drama I ever watched
jovanakopjk15 January 2021
I am sorry if there are some grammatical mistakes, also this is my first review.

I started watching the series because of Lee Min-Ho. Right at the beginning, I liked how the actors played their roles, it can be seen that they invested a lot to make everything turn out as it should. I've watched a lot of movies and series and each of them has their own drama and great actors, but this series impressed me so much. The plot of the series itself contains so much pain, revenge, dark secrets, love, shows us how strong and special family ties can be, and I was especially impressed by the end of the series how much emotion Lee Min-Ho (Lee Yun-seong) and Sang-Jung Kim (Lee Jin-pyo) invested to film it. As for me, I wish that in the end they showed us the wedding of Lee Yun-seong and Kim Na-na, but this ending wasn't so bad either. I would honestly like if they can film second season (it's never too late for that), and preferably with the same actors, so that we can finally see Lee Yun-seong and Kim Na-na get together. I'm not a person who cries with series like this, but this series made me cry. Congrats to the actors and everyone who participated in the creation of this series, you all did an excellent job!!!

I am gonna continue to watch Lee Min-Ho for sure, he really is an excellent actor.
