Tripping with Someone Who Won't Let Us Relax For A Second!
Don't mind me, just reflecting on my own work.
Okay, I'll start with the positives. There are some funny moments, the zip line scene is great, and some of the music is nice... well, that was short.
The first half hour is really slow, with minimal to nothing going on before this Jacob guy goes on holiday. An example being him looking through things after the diary introduction; it serves nothing to the film. We only find out around 25 minutes into the film, that Wales will be the main location.
Once we do get there we have to go through your typical stuff like unpacking, shopping, etc. Jacob would normally be funny, but he tries a little too hard and says a thing every 5 seconds of the movie. The movie would be more laidback and relaxing if it was silent, etc.
Another problem is that we spend minimal time at Wales; roughly 45 minutes in fact (literally HALF of the movie). There's little to no time to check the mountains, the environment to admire, the waterfall or the beach afterwards... it only stays there for a minute then moves on.
We even get a cop out with the mountain scenery, with a brief pause to say "Jacob got tired and had to survive". We spend most of the time at either a caravan or at the bar/arcades. Don't get me wrong, the scenery is beautiful, but it missed the potential to let us breathe for a minute or without a forced joke.
The music is repetitive, using the same beats and melodies throughout; that's it.
While I do see people enjoying this movie for its simplicity and environments, I think it's one of my more overrated films. It's slow, tries too hard to be funny at times, and then gets waaaaay too fast during its second half.
If you want a more fun and fast vacay film, the second and soon third films may help. Maybe I should make a better Wales film next time.
