A documentary on the newly opened nuclear power plant at Shippingport, PA, the first large scale nuclear facility in the world dedicated to peaceful i.e. non-military purposes, this one for the development of electric power within a traditional electricity grid, specifically that for the nearby metropolitan area of Pittsburgh, and for research on nuclear power for such conventional uses for future plants. The actual science/engineering behind the creation of nuclear power, including the containment of the potentially dangerous radioactive output, is described. The development of the facility is then described, that process which had to delve into many unprecedented areas and as such had no best practice upon which to draw.
