- The Birthday is a drama about a drug addicted mother who, despite missing every important event in her daughter's life, she is determined to set things right on her daughter's eighteenth birthday. Deciding that a gift was the best way to show her affection, she steals a few dollars from her daughter with the intention of buying a birthday cake. Only, when she arrives at the store, it's already closed. Unable to bear the thought of walking into the house and seeing the look of disappointment on her daughter's face, she opts to use the money to buy drugs instead. As she sits in the alley watching her daughter's money "go up in smoke," her reality begins to fade. She fails to realize that the best gift she could have given her daughter was not money, or gifts. The thing her daughter wanted most, she already possessed... her presence.
