- LOVE + 1 is an emotional romance screenplay. It is the story of two strangers with very different views on love and society, in the style of WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. Despite being generally light-hearted, some sombre and unchangeable truths unfold throughout to give a touching sadness akin to GHOST. The story takes places throughout London where the couple drop everything to spend a day and night together. If you argue it 'love' when you've convinced yourself to settle, what do you call it when you meet 'the one'?—Anonymous
- John wakes and seriously ponders his day ahead. He seems carefree, yet sombre as he processes fruit without the blender lid on, which sprays his kitchen full of smoothie. He exits his house and bumps in to an obnoxious banker who it turns out is buying Johns house. Its an unscheduled visit and John seems unperturbed in foiling the bankers viewing plans.
Calm, endearing and familiar to his local community, John sits in his usual place, in his usual café, when Penny bursts in to the venue, full of energy and verve. With instant chemistry they both sit chatting to each other and enjoying arguing about philosophies on life and love. Penny discusses settling for whats on offer, but John warns of affairs and divorce unless you wait for the one. He argues if she calls it love in her scenario, what do you call it when two people are still in love after 60 years of marriage, Love+1? Their opposite characteristics draw them together - they enjoy the debate.
Penny soon finds herself learning from John, and starts to reconsider and re-assess what she wants from life. She admits shes engaged and John tries to tell her he knows. From what shes said John also realises that the banker he bumped in to that morning was her fiancée. But on trying to admit it, hes interrupted and they decide to deal with it tomorrow. They venture out on a whirlwind tour of Clapham, London, forgetting about consequences and just enjoy each others company, albeit John struggling physically at points. The fun is cut short when theyre nearly mugged and John saves them, careless with his own safety.
After a fun-filled day ending with an adrenalin rush, the local John takes her back to his house for a calming cup of tea, where she recognises the area as somewhere her fiancée is buying his new house. Inside his still fruit-covered kitchen, John again tries to tell her its house her fiancees buying and why hes selling. Passion overtakes and she fills his uncertain silence with a kiss; they end up sleeping together.
During their pillow talk, John reveals hes selling his house to her fiancée, and hes selling it because he has a brain tumour and will die sometime in the next few days. Penny struggles to handle the revelation and leaves.
Cut to seven years later and we see Penny now in a loving relationship, found the right guy, and a little boy is with them in the kitchen. The young boy is Johns son from their night together and as he turns on the blender before putting the lid on and fruit overflows; Pennys fondly reminded of that day with John.
