- Picard grapples with a life-altering revelation as the crew of the Titan attempt to outmaneuver Vadic, while Raffi and Worf uncover a plot by a vengeful enemy.
- Many years ago, Riker was on the Titan with Troi when his son Thad was born. There were complications and the sick bay summoned Riker. It took him 17 seconds to get there. In that moment, Riker became a father.
Titan enters the nebula to hide from the Shrike but can't warp away till they are inside the gas clouds. The Titan is able to hide from the Shrike as no sensors work inside the nebula. Beverly talks to Picard and confirms that Jack is his son. She never told Picard as he was always busy with one assignment or the next. In addition, there were several attempts on Picard's life. And Picard himself had told Beverly that he didn't want a family. Beverly explains that she did not tell Picard about Jack to keep their son safe from assassination attempts.
She says that Jack and her help worlds in need that Starfleet has abandoned. She says for the past few weeks, everywhere they go, someone turns on them and their objective seems to be to get their hands on Jack. Beverly believes this is not about Jack, the unknown forces are really after Picard.
Suddenly, the Shrike is able to track down the Titan. Shaw is stumped as it is impossible to track down a ship inside a nebula. The Shrike attacks the Titan, injuring Shaw who transfers command to Riker. Picard acts as the first officer.
Riker finds that the gas cloud is not really a nebula, but an unknown anomaly. Riker tries to escape to warp by exiting the nebula/anomaly. The Titan attempts to escape the nebula but is cornered by the Shrike using portal technology. The Shrike opens a portal right in front of the Titan, and transports it deeper inside the nebula.
Shaw asks Jack to figure out how the Shrike is able to track the Titan. Jack is not allowed on the bridge, and so he breaks out Seven, who is confined to her quarters. Jack and Seven deduce that Vadic is tracking a gas leak on the Titan. Seven & Jack go to the engines room to isolate find an ensign sabotaging the ship. He is revealed to be a Changeling and escapes their custody. Jack is knocked out during the skirmish and has visions of a Red Door. Meanwhile the Titan is moving to the center of the nebula, that hosts a large gravitational well.
Picard says that they use the saboteur to their advantage. They will stop the leak and position themselves behind the Shrike and attack. Picard wants Riker to lure the Shrike into this trap, but Riker wants to flee and prioritize saving the crew. But the Changeling blows up a power conduit and the warp power goes to zero on the ship. The Titan cannot run away.
Worf takes Raffi to her ship, the La Sirena and introduces himself. Worf subcontracts for Starfleet. Worf says that an attack is coming, and the recruitment center was only the beginning. Worf says that a human named Titus Rikka (Thomas Dekker) paid the Ferengi to lie. Worf works with Raffi to track down Rikka and find out who stole the weapons. Using the freighter La Sirena, Raffi and Worf travel to M'Talas Prime & capture Rikka. They discover that Rikka is also a Changeling, part of a group that has been fighting the Federation since the end of the Dominion War and realize that the attack was just a distraction. Rikka reveals that the portal weapon was just a distraction to hide the real things being stolen from Daystrom. Worf kills Rikka when he tries to escape. Worf and Raffi travel to Daystrom station to find some answers.
Convinced by Picard's insistence that they fight back, Riker fires on the Shrike. Their weapons are redirected back at them with a portal and the Titan sustains heavy damage. Riker blames Picard and orders him off the bridge as they drift towards a gravitational anomaly in the nebula. The Shrike retreats.
