Sad but realistic
shannonripsher0814 April 2022
Not everyone who falls in love, stay in love. And the great thing about This is Us is that this is acknowledged. Like many other things.

I love Toby and I love Kate but I must admit, throughout this messy relationship, I was more team Toby because i could relate to his depression and Kate's behaviour towards him would have inevitably made him spiral.

I love them both, but they are better apart. And that's the sad thing. Despite the love and care you feel for someone, marriage isn't the pretty picture movies and other tv shows paint it to be.

Magic TV
aeslehcevoli14 April 2022
The reason I give it a 10. This is this first episode where I have actually let out a wail and cried, yes I've had tears pouring down my face on quite a few episodes but this one I finally let it out.

Maybe it was Chelsea going out of the Champions League on Tuesday night, or those last 5 minutes that summed up the Katoby story.

I know all of our opinions are different, I respect that and each of us see this show through different eyes, but this one really hurt.

It was a magnificent piece of writing that crafted one of the best episodes of the show. It was magic TV.

This is a great ending to the Toby and Kate story.
CHUDMasterPatriot13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is how I predicted that they would end but my jaw hit the floor at the last 10 seconds of the episode. Seeing Kate and Philip with Toby and his new wife in the future with Jack singing as an adult at his concert was amazing. When Kate said "this is not the end of a story because we're getting divorced" was incredible. I love Kate and Philip together and I love Philip's story about his ex-wife. I adored the birthday parties with Kate and Philip with Toby and the family. This is the way it supposed to be. This was my favorite episode this season so far. Bravo to the writers. They are exceptional. I was never team Kate or team Toby. I'm so glad that they ended their marriage and Kate was able to be strong.

Chrissy Metz's Turn
montgomerysue14 April 2022
As the second half of this season progresses, the writers of this show have really allowed the two female leads to show off just how talented they are and how they completely understand their rather complicated characters. Prior to this episode, Mandy Moore has been brilliant and, in this one, Chrissy Metz is equally outstanding in her portrayal of a wife and mother who comes to the realization that her marriage is over. How she gets there is well-written and directed, and she plays it out with heartfelt emotion, determination, and strength that is very moving without being depressing.

This is "This Is Us" at its best. Credit must be given to Chris Sullivan (as Toby) and Chris Geere (as Philip) playing polar opposite characters whose fine acting provides Metz with the opportunity to really shine here.

A great episode for this series.

Worst episode EVER
saifeliya13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well, not like this , it's a beautiful episode just like every episode of this show but I just had so many mixed emotions with Katy and Toby divorcing .. it's sad .. it is Life .. we are living 6 years with Toby and Kate and seeing them divorcing and how their relationship became when they were fighting is just sad .

I don't understand people blaming it all on Kate , calling her whiny and stuff .. sometimes love just ends maybe she was looking for the small things to divorce with him as when Toby said that he wants to see Dianne again she told him No I've never felt happy like this in a long time and it's like I can breathe again .. that sums it up that she didn't want to stay with him.

If we could only live our lives backwards....
dolphiea13 April 2022
If we could only do this.... and some other outcome would happen. Not so much. Sisyphus pushed the rock up the hill over and over again....same thing was always going to happen. This episode suggests that we might have the ability to ( 20/20 hindsight) fix stuff that was bound to not work out. Sorry that the writers seem to have made "Katoby" kind of cliche, especially for those of us that have lived that reality. The Kate/Phillip story feels expedited, like- lets wrap things up with all this unpleasantness, even if it makes no sense.

I was getting sick of this show but this episode surprised me
Linda-workerbee13 April 2022
I thought another episode of Kate and Toby? But it was done really well and didn't leave you guessing. This is why the show is liked. They are flawed but all try to be good people. I'm glad the show is ending. Unlike other seasons, I think they are getting it right.

This one was deep. Lessons, way beyond the taking sides for Kate or Toby....
nahalymtl21 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has so many life lessons to take away:

1) For me, it hit close to home: Toby feeling he is competing against the ghost of perfect dad, Jack Pearson. That was on point. Kate herself did not realize (me neither), having a idolized dad, can add a lot of pressure.

2) When is it time to split?

(a) when your kid has to find ways to stop your yelling (by throwing his toy in the toilet), when your toddler becomes the peacekeeper, maybe that is your queue. Else, (b) when you find yourself in the very spot where you have always forbidden yourself to be (Toby said he promised himself, never to never put his children through), you reached your own milestone. Else (c) simply when you can't stand each other, when seeing the other makes you sad: Toby has to leave Kate, because he is unhappy around her, point blank.

3) When is it time to marry?

Phillip has to marry Kate, because he is happy around her (same logic as the above 2c)

I can't leave this thread without mentioning even if I do not remember the exact quotes: 4) Kate's "that does not have to be the end" and 5) Kate's "if we could live our lives backwards".

You got it, a grew a few inches watching this episode. Thanks to the "this is us" team for both story and acting.

I thought Jack was the blind one
interestingstuff22 October 2022
I thought (baby) Jack was the blind one in the show. It turns out Philip is the blind one. He can't see what's right on front of him and walks right into lake of fire.

Toby should be thankful he didn't have to spend a lifetime with someone like Kate who is extremely miserable and horrible person overall. I don't know why writers made character so bad. It's like they hate her and they want viewers to hate her as well. This is not a good way to write a good character. She's so one dimensional in every possible way imaginable and the writer assigned to writing her character must be some high school student.

Was Not So Sure About Phillip....in 100th Episode
shelbythuylinh14 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Really was not so sure but he is the one that treats Kate like a queen and needed to do so. Phillip is a true gentleman.

As she has been the one of the three Pierson children that has been the breakout star and how her troubles that become her strengths there.

Chrissy Metz has a great singing voice there. But really Toby only wanted what Toby wants and that he put her down a times. And how that he blamed her for everything and it was everybody's fault except his.

But he will do whatever it takes to save his loved ones but it could be too little too late. Kate deserves happiness there and someone that will treat her right.

Very good - except for....
philpotts-6123514 April 2022
..... Philip's crazy, irritating accent.

As an Englishman I expect to hear other Englishmen speaking with an English accent, not a strange concoction of Australian and New Zealand. It is utterly ridiculous that he has been directed to speak in such a phoney way.

Whiplash but makes sense later
meyersjl-959-17933628 April 2022
The timelines in this episode jump around so much it gives me whiplash. I didn't quite understand it but after watching that preceding three episodes it makes much more sense.

Kate sucks!! Team Toby!!
bhamiltonesq18 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
She does NOT deserve a happy ending by any means! I was really bothered by how she reacted when Toby says he will quit his job in San Francisco (a job he LOVES) to come back to LA. Not only does she let him do it, she shows zero appreciation of what he is giving up for the sake of their marriage. Kate's response, a half-hearted "ok".

She suggests couple's therapy, but then made no effort in the therapy sessions and if that was how she was going to be, she should never have let him leave SF. She should have called it quits right then. Kate truly treated Toby like crap and took him for granted. And of course she gets the house in the divorce as well.

I really enjoyed hearing Phillip's backstory and immediately thought "Run!! Kate does not deserve you."

One silver lining, looks like Toby finds love again and I could not be happier for him!!

So happy this is the last season.

Free Toby
glenhammond17 August 2022
Kate is freaking awful. Cannot stand her. She tried to squeeze all the pride and good humour out of Toby. But Toby is a real top lad, stayed strong. Thank goodness he's now free of her succubus talons and can live happily.

The Pearson 3 have GOAT level talent at polluting important relationships through cheap point scoring.

Phillip, a fellow Brit, is taking one for the team big time. Thank you mate. She's your problem now.

Score reflects a 5 for Toby & Zero for Kate.

Kate Pearson is the worst! Seriously the worst!
simonsste10 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously she is the worst character in this show. I physically wince when the episode centres around her. Beyond the overweight story lines there is nothing to her character.

Toby deserved so much better. He got a bigger and better job, where he was comfortable and good at his job. He did everything he could to provide for his family so they wouldn't go without, with very little support and comfort. Litterally no understanding what it's like to lose your job and have no support from your other half. IRL fact, most couples divorce due to the husband losing their job and not being able to provide.

He got little support from Kate when finding out his first born son had sight problems. All the things we take for granted like watching your boy watch the films you love have all been taken away.

He lost weight to be increase his life span, scared of having another heart attack, to feel good about himself, and be a better role model for his kids. He should have had a say in what his kids eat as it's understandable concerns given both of their weight insecurities.

Plus side best couple by far has to be Randall and Beth.

Always the victim...
maketomusic13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
.. Never the victor...

I am glad that this Katoby era is finally over, but the writers of this show really did Toby wrong in EVERY way possible.. You really succeeded with making it look like Toby were the "bad guy" trough it all. Toby were the ONLY one who actually wanted their marriage to work. But Kate wanted drama for some pathetic reason and wanted to be the so called "victim"..

I feel bad for Philip, but maybe Toby can FINALLY get the happiness he, for so long, deserved to get.

I think it's rare to have the good old man living a simple life made of ups and downs but together forever.
rubiasalf5 May 2022
It took 5 seasons to understand the couple Toby and Kate, life has always been and always will be made of ups and downs, but it's amazing how nowadays the most fashionable thing is the destruction of traditional family values, a couple lives together until die . In the past, when there were problems, they would try to fix and fix something that was broken. Today everything got easier, it's just the divorce and life goes on. Respect but I don't agree, I think the series destroyed the best couple in the series (after Jack and Rebecca), sometimes it's not necessary to kill the protagonist or destroy the family just to make more impact on viewers. It used to be hard for something bad to happen in movies or series, today I think it's rare to have the good old man living a simple life made of ups and downs but together forever.

5 is generous...fricking Kate
marymcfarland-0186614 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Kate in therapy acting like she did trying to throw Toby under all of the busses made me want to jump through the TV. All of her behavior looked like someone who was trying to get the therapist to pick sides. Got on my last nerve. I was thrilled that Toby found a match after the divorce.

This episode was ok....we got to see Kevin act like a dating idiot again, could have done without that. I really like Phillip and his back story was so moving, unfortunately, it didn't get the time it deserved.

Overall, this episode seemed rushed. Can we please get an episode that's light on the Kate drama?

Probably the worst episode of TIU
kdcrg15 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the worst episode of TIU I've ever seen, they created something beautiful and then destroyed it completely. Kate and Toby have overcame so much difficulties to get this far, they should've weather this storm and fix their problems, but the writers took the easy way out, they could've made the wedding scene the renewal of Katoby's vow, but they have to ruin it for us. They tried to make Toby the bad guy but instead it just makes Kate more selfish than ever in the process. Some viewers say it's raw and real and emotional, but that's not why I watched and loved this show, TIU has always been the show that makes us see the silver lining in a cloudy day, until the writers decided to turn it into a family drama show and made us hate every single Pearson members. I for one am glad it's coming to an end.

So sick of this whiny family
gotobowl-0006713 April 2022
Kate is the poster child for "poor me," self-centered behavior. And that's saying something since her brother is Randall, king of the whiners. I am actually glad this show is ending. It has turned into a sad, bitter portrayal of selfish people. It didn't start out that way. To all of the Pearson - grow up!!! Life is hard. Get over yourselves.

Horrible turn of events
orvil_n14 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
They messed the show up so much with Kate and Toby splitting up. This was the worst episode. They could've made them work things out instead of having them divorce each other.

Depressing and Boring
janilic13 April 2022
When I started watching this show, back in 2016, every episode would leave me speechless. During every episode I would laugh and cry and think deep about life, and life IS all of that together. Then it slowly started losing its sparkle.

These last episodes don't bring any good emotions to me, it's just full of depression, unhappy people who repeat their mistakes over and over again, and a bunch of annoying personalities. It feels like I have to go to work every time I have to sit and devote 45 mins just because it used to be one of my favourite shows. Thank you ''This is Us'' but it is time to say goodbye.

I love you Tobey
tmccheyne16 February 2024
Blimey he does not need the likes of Katy. She is a selfish and hateful to him. He is never allowed to have what he needs, it's all her needs and wants.

Tobey is everything I would want a hubby, father and everything I would want. I hope he gets the wife he needs and that he gets to see his children regularly, although Kate will still only see he is doing it wrong.

The best part of this episode was the minute in the Lift.

Maybe Philip says it all in that Americans have an obsession about how or what they should be feeling, and they are only the ones who have feelings. Don't they make life hard and create problems that aren't there. They feel happy feeling miserable. I cannot stand Kate. I want Tobey to be happy.

No Reason to Break Up that Family
milly_ele31 March 2024
The writers wanted to change Toby's personality, I don't know why. I liked how his and Kate's relationship started. They were both in a bad place and helped each other out of it. Toby had a lot more work with Kate. She was self hating and obsessed with her weight. She couldn't manage to have the least bit of fun, but Toby helped her through that. I think it's because he loved her as she was. That's why I don't understand why the writers would want to break apart that relationship. They're a family with kids. It's so wrong!

And Phillip (or whatever his name is) is super boring and forgettable too!
