Season Two Review
Three years ago, I watched the first season of "Undone" that appeared on Amazon Prime. I've just finished the second, that has sat on my 'get back to' list for over a year - which is in no way a reflection of the enduring quality that I think this appreciated by underseen series has.
Having shifted reality to save her father (Bob Odenkirk) Alma (Rosa Salazar) comes to realise that the world has some other differences now, that she didn't anticipate. Most are minor, but one is a substantial change in her mother's (Constance Marie) personality. She is secretive and Becca (Angelique Cabral) recalls seeing her in a car with a man that she didn't recognise. Another is that Becca appears to have the same powers as Alma.
This second season of "Undone" has kept the rotoscope animation style the that first season did and again it's a useful combination for capturing the performances of the real actors and the fantasy elements that the story brings in. There is a lot more of that this season, not just straight moving through time anymore, but "Inception" like entering of dreams and a proper Escher style fantasy world towards the end of the season. It's a clever trippy story, which leads you in one direction and then another and is anchored by a really good, witty and appealing central performance from Rosa Salazar. The show wouldn't work half as well without her in the central role.
It's surprisingly emotional too, especially in the final episode, which is interesting because you could, theoretical skip that episode and have a happier ending than the bittersweet one that comes with that final one.
I'd assume, from a show that doesn't appear to have much of a cultural footprint and I'd also imagine it's quite a time consuming show to produce, so I'd suggest that we're unlikely to get any more "Undone" but these two season were a good time.
