When Did The Movies First Notice Surf Boards?
boblipton31 August 2020
Surfing may have first come tothe attention of the West during Captain Cook's voyages; by the 1860s, Mark Twain noticed it on a trip to Hawaii. It hit California in 1885, when three Hawaiian princes at boarding school went surfing near Santa Cruz.

I'm not convinced that this actuality shot by Robert Bonine was the first time surfboarding showed up in the movies. It is an early one and, given the distance from the landbound camera to the surfboarders, the composition is pretty good.
