- Hedge fund Wilder broker Timothy Hartley, Nathan Vella's partner, is shot and has his throat slit in a field 100 miles from his even richer wife Peregrine née Cook's Hillsborough mansion. The corps is stolen by two armed men during transport in coroner Steiner's van. Given two earlier victim thefts inter-state, the FBI suspects organ tissue trade and sends special agent Craig O'Laughlin. Tim also was treated for an alien abduction delusion in that distant field. The coroner is allowed to collaborate clumsily for a morbid reason, which Jane helps carry to the bitter end.—KGF Vissers
- When the investment broker Timothy Hartley is found murdered, shot and with slit throat, Patrick Jane and Lisbon investigates the crime scene, and Patrick plays a trick in coroner Steiner. While transporting the corpse to the morgue, the van of Steiner is stopped and the body is stolen by two hooded men. Lisbon and Patrick head to the Cook's mansion, who belongs to a traditional family, to interview Hartley's family member. Meanwhile, FBI agent Craig O'Laughlin joins the CBI team since the FBI is investigating organ tissue trade. The CBI agents learn that Timothy as claiming that he had been abducted by aliens and they follow the lead. - A man lies dead and bloodied in a field, wearing a business shirt. He's Timothy Hartley. He was killed last night -- shot and throat slit.
Jane is tickled to hear the coroner's office sent Dr. Steiner, his favorite teasing target. Jane goes to inspect the body and Steiner tells him to take three steps back. He threatens to have a deputy remove him.
Jane says he can see all he needs. He pronounces Hartley someone who works in money, but not a banker. He's a social drinker, but been drinking more. His wife has more money than him, Jane deduces from the loafer he bought himself and opal cufflinks she bought him.
Finally Jane says he sees something in the victim's pocket. Steiner takes out a note: "You're about to think, what the hell? How did Jane do that?" it reads.
Later, Jane gets a call. They go down the road to see the coroner's van pulled over. Steiner has a bump on his head. They were robbed -- someone took the body.
Back at the office, Steiner says two men jumped them.
Jane tells him it wasn't his fault, the men had guns. Steiner feels like he failed.
Van Pelt talks about wedding sites with her fiancé, FBI Agent Craig O'Laughlin. She wants to do it at a state park, but they don't allow weddings.
The victim ran a hedge fund called the HV Wilder Fund, his wife was part of the famed Cook family.
Lisbon goes to talk to Tim's wife and her mom Elsbeth at her family's giant mansion. Jane leans cavalierly against the mantel and asks how they got their money. Sugar beets.
His wife says they were going to start a family. Jane deduces that Elsbeth didn't like her son in law. He thinks the wife is afraid of something.
Cho visits with Tim's partner at the Wilder Fund, who says they've had excellent returns lately. He says Tim would never play around on his wife.
Back at the office, Van Pelt says three other bodies have been stolen from vans recently. Craig is on it because it's interstate crime. They think the bodies are being harvested for tissue.
Steiner tells Jane a small amount of blood was found at the crime scene -- it had two different DNAs in it, but not enough to ID. He thinks they could get an ID from the body. He wants to help.
Jane brings him to Lisbon and says he'll be joining them.
Jane says they have to figure out "the big weird secret that the widow and the partner won't tell us about that no one will mention."
Lisbon finds an appointment each week with no information in his calendar. Steiner suggests they check his GPS.
Jane, Lisbon, Cho and Steiner follow it to a medical building. Lisbon still thinks Jane is up to something with Steiner. As they're trying to figure out who he might have been meeting with in the building, Jane pulls the fire alarm.
Outside, Jane addresses the group, telling them they're looking for the doctor who treated Timothy Hartley. He asks them to raise their hand. He surveys the crowd and singles out Dr. Wendolyn McCormick.
Jane says everyone else was looking around to see who it was, but she wasn't.
She says Tim had a traumatizing experience he wanted to work through and had been in therapy for four months. He believed he'd been was abducted by aliens and examined then released. "Kidnapped by aliens. Cool," Jane says.
Later, they watch Tim's taped story, saying he was lifted up onto a ship. He's clearly disturbed by it. He says they were small ash gray beings. Jane thinks he's nuts.
Van Pelt says they can't prove there aren't aliens.
Lisbon, Jane and Steiner revisit Tim's wife Peregrine. She says Tim's business partner begged her not to tell the CBI. She doesn't think her husband was crazy.
Elsbeth joins them and says Tim was drunk and it's rubbish.
Jane wanders off around the house. Steiner follows. Jane finds the good booze and pours Steiner a scotch.
They sit and Steiner looks at Jane and says "You know, don't you? You know that I'm sick," Steiner says.
Jane says he noticed his weight loss and odd color from medication.
Steiner says he's dying and has about a month.
Steiner enjoys his scotch and thanks Jane for the distraction. Jane suggests he help himself to a cigar. Jane pokes around the desk and sees a picture of a young girl with a man and a dead deer.
Cho talks to the business partner, asking why she asked Tim's wife to lie about the aliens. He was worried about the perception. He mentions a "UFO fruitcake" who he thinks might be trying to bilk Tom. His name was Kirk.
Out talking to funeral homes, Van Pelt says she has an errand to run. Rigsby waits in the car but gets impatient. He goes to the window to see she's getting a wedding dress.
Later, Van Pelt, Rigsby and O'Laughlin go talk to a funeral home director. He admits he started selling bodies to tissue banks with permission, then his cousin Owen Milling came to him offering bodies. He dummied paperwork to give the bodies false names.
They find Milling did time with Jim Matthews, who's out on parole.
They go visit the guys at a junkyard. They're talking when a rough looking woman, one of their moms, comes out with a shotgun. Rigbsy's about to disarm her when Matthews pulls a gun. A shoot out breaks out. As they're ducking for cover, Rigbsy notices Van Pelt is having trouble reloading and is exposed. O'Laughlin freezes and Rigsby goes to help her. Milling ends up getting shot.
Back at CBI, they found Milling called a Wellview Funeral Home yesterday.
Cho and Lisbon pay a visit to Newsome Kirk, the UFO guy. He says Tim talked about funding his Fourth Kind Foundation. He says Tim had a fight with his shrink because she wanted to write a book about him.
Lisbon gets a text. Newsome Kirk turns out to be Garrett Roston, who spent a year in prison for fraud. There's a warrant out for his arrest for kiting checks.
Back at the office, Kirk has posted bail. They confirmed McCormick did propose a book, but withdrew it.
The PR woman calls Lisbon to let her know Steiner is about to do an interview about tissue banks and the illegal trade.
Lisbon arrives to see Steiner telling the camera that there's crucial blood evidence on the body, if only they could find it. Lisbon cuts short the interview.
Rigsby tells Cho about O'Laughlin freezing on Van Pelt. He wonders if he should tell VP.
Late at night, Steiner calls someone, telling them he lied, he has the body and is willing to sell it for $50,000 to cover up the murder they committed. He says he'll do it because he's a dying man.
Pan over and we see Jane listening approvingly. He deems the performance good, if a bit over the top.
Later, Jane and Lisbon wait nearby with the team as Steiner nervously waits to meet his contact. An SUV pulls up and the butler gets out. Jane dances around with glee, announcing the butler did it.
Jane checks the back seat, and finds Elspeth. She has a cut on her hand, from slitting Tim's throat.
Back at CBI, Elspeth says Tim wanted to start the Cook Family Foundation for Alien Abductees and she wasn't about to let him do that to the family name.
She says she and the butler followed Tim to the field where he thought he was abducted. The butler shot him and Elspeth went over and slit his throat. Jane attributes it to her hunting background and pulls out the photo he swiped from the study of her as a young girl with a deer. She says she was taught to never let the animal suffer.
Rigbsy sits down with Van Pelt, saying he wants to talk to her. He considers her for a minute and then says his friend's a ranger at the park where she wants to get married and he might be able to get her a waiver.
Jane drops by Steiner's house. He thanks Jane for letting him tag along.
Steiner says he know he's going to get bad very soon and he has no interest in "letting nature take its course." He wants to kill himself.
He tells Jane that if there is an unexplained death, there is an autopsy and he doesn't want that. He says if the death it witnessed by a law enforcement officer, no investigation is required.
Jane's not sure he can, or that suicide is the best idea.
Steiner says he understands and starts to show Jane out. Then Jane stops and asks if Steiner has tea.
Steiner says he's going in the other room and will be a few minutes. Jane tells him to take his time. He makes tea.
He sits with Steiner as he starts to fade. They have tea.
Steiner asks how he got the note in the dead man's pocket. He guesses Jane had an arrangement with the deputy. He says it's an old carnie trick. He entertains Steiner with magic tricks.
Steiner thanks him. Jane remains calm and continues with his disappearing trick until Steiner slumps over.
