Sebastian surprises the von Lahnstein family and friends by starting his plea describing Philipp as a slick womanizer, then smartly paints a subtler portrait of Nicola's reformed lover and suicidally-deranged, scorned-spiteful Antonia. The prosecutor tries to use her momentary doubts to undo Philipp's credibility and calls blackmailer Steinberg. Ansgar isn't amused that ice-maiden Lydia adds understanding for her sympathizing with Sebastian's case to her list of demands, yet gives in again.
