All but one of the previous episodes of the overall more than solid first season of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' (which very quickly became an unexpected favourite) , in my view, range between good to outstanding. The exception being the still quite decent but just slightly above mixed feelings "Boast Busters", to me too a lesser episode of Season 1, an episode that not every fan of the show likes.
"Suited for Success", the fourteenth episode of the season and of the show, is another episode that joins the outstanding category. As well as being one of Season 1's best, "Suited for Success" is one of the most personal and relatable. Am aware that the terms "relatable" and "easy to relate to" have been used a lot by me, but merely because it is important for me that a film, episode, cartoon etc is (unless of course any unlikeability is a deliberate choice) and have seen a lot of stuff recently where that is a major strength.
Really enjoy "Suited for Success" story, which is one that a lot of people in the same situation, similar situations or different situations but with the same feelings will identify with. Am one of those people, and see a little bit of myself in Rarity, except with me it's singing rather than dress making. It is hard not to admire her dedication, eagerness (turning though into over-eagerness) and not putting herself first, and also to relate to her frustration and upset. Genuinely feel for Rarity, especially when inconsolable in her bedroom, in some of her most interesting character writing of the season and certainly up to this nearly halfway stage of it.
Love the relevant and unforced moral of it's okay to not be selfless in a while (though usually if one has anxiety and health problems, personally have both and that has always been a flaw of mine) and not try so hard to please others. Actually feel that that is an important message/moral to teach and at a young age too.
Despite the possible danger of it coming across as too mean, the other ponies' nit-picking and apprehension are understandable, especially when it is something that one faces when in the same or similar situation. But when it comes to their friendship and sympathy towards Rarity, they are very likeable and it is always great when the friendship theme is honoured. "Suited for Success" is another well written episode, with a perfect balance of humour and pathos, both done brilliantly individually. Hilariously in the former and poignant in the latter and the episode excels in not going over people's heads while not dumbing down at the same time.
As ever, the animation is colourful and elegant and it was a great for the dresses to be a mix of beautiful and hideous. With the music, "Art of the Dress" is so catchy and much cleverer than the title of the song suggests. The voice acting is very good, with Tabitha St Germain pretty impeccable as Rarity.
