Women in animation

"Pivot" starts sweet, with a beatiful, shining and simple design. But it's not your avarege cute animation: the protagonist soon reaches unsetling and surreal grounds, in a very elaborate scenario for such a short narrative.

The main crew is an all-female one. Such things was not suposed to be still remarkable, but we are still going after the gender equality in the industry (and going after all equalities, for that matter). But "Pivot" is not about being "just" important. It's about bring a powerfull message through beautiful animation.

Excellent!

Warning: Spoilers
This is an excellent animated short that tackles topics of gender expression and expectations placed on young girls and the relationship between these children and a parent(s) who has more traditional definitions of femininity and coming to understand that your child may not follow those expectations.

The style is akin to a children's illustrated book, beautiful colors and character design with the real creative flare tied to the metamorphic horror of the monster to be defeated the most catching of these animated sequences.

Another benefit to this is the near lack of dialogue. It plays into the sense of frustration the child character feels in relation to her mother's gender expectations, accented by the small noises of a voice cutoff.

Overall a satisfying, relatable, educational short that is a necessity for everyone of all ages.

a frilly dress
Kirpianuscus10 November 2023
The essential virtue of this short film is the wise manner to reflect, faithful, the transformations of a teenager in clash against the expectations of adult. The story is simple and precise crafted. The drawings are more than beautiful and the tension is created with high care. No dialogue but the message sounds clear and loud. And the frustration of the sportif girl for who the mother tries develop the feminin side with make up and the frilly dress, the photo reminding the childhood comformism, the beginning offering record of basket match are enough for fair atmosphere and smart conception. For the last, the epic fight of girl against carnivor flower dress is just lovely to impressive.

In short, faithful portrait of so familiar reality of emancipation.
