The annual traveling fair comes to Candleford and it leads to interesting outcomes for many of the locals. Laura is chosen queen of the fair and is so taken with her crown of roses that she decides to wear it constantly. Alf wins the shin-kicking contest and is a champion in everyone's eyes except Minnie's who saw him step over the line. Alf denies it but Minnie's decision to see less of him leads to a bit of soul-searching. Queenie and Twister are the big winners at the fair, taking home a full-sized pig. Queenie makes a gift of the pig to everyone in Lark Rise but Twister, despite his best efforts to resist, ends up selling parts of it to various people in Candleford.
