- A daring robbery during a high-stakes poker game forces Hugo to ask Balagan for help, prompting the chess master to create his own complex plot to trap the culprit.
- When Balagan learns that the hotel's head of security, Hugo Lum, was robbed at gunpoint during his secret high-stakes poker game, he sees an opportunity to earn a finder's fee. Wary of the crafty Russian, Hugo agrees to Balagan's terms but that means putting up with the chess master's arrogance. Balagan deduces the robber was a former hotel employee and follows his trail to the money, but was he working alone, or did the thief have a partner? With all the poker players accusing each other, Balagan uses their greed against them to get the money into the hands of a more deserving party. Balagan divides his attention between the robbery and new evidence in Rosemary's murder case that suggests he might have been the intended target in the shooting.—Anonymous
- During a regular illegal high stakes poker game in one of the hotel's suites where Hugo was performing security duties, the group is held up by a masked man. Although the thief is accidentally shot in the abdomen with his own gun, he is able to get away with $100,000 in cash. Knowing the police won't be contacted since the game was illegal, Arkady, sensing an opportunity, offers to find the thief in exchange for a 15% cut of the take and his hotel bill to be wiped clean. Both Barbara and Hugo agree. Arkady senses it was an inside job as the thief knew where the security cameras were located and he had an override key to all the hotel doors and elevators. As the thief entered the suite when Hugo was in the bathroom relieving himself, each of the five disparate poker players believes one of the other four is an accomplice. With help from the hotel staff, Arkady is able to identify the thief. When he learns a bit more of the back story of the thief - more specifically the cousin of the thief - Arkady has to decide what to do with the information to exact his form of justice. Concurrently, Arkady begins to help Pippa investigate Rosemary's murder. From watching surveillance footage, Arkady believes he was the intended target of a KGB murder plot, with Rosemary the unintended victim. He needs to speak to a high priced Vietnamese prostitute who was working the hotel that night, she who may be able to provide some key information into the murder.—Huggo
