- A battle is raging in the village of Great Pelfe over the future of development in the village. Maureen Stubbs is a vocal advocate of maintaining the architectural and historical integrity of the village and at a recent house and garden tour, she accused James Otley and developer Geoff Rivers of setting out to destroy the village with their proposal for a new housing development. When Stubbs is stabbed to death with a broken bottle that very night, DCI Barnaby and DS Jones have a murder to solve. Elections are forthcoming and pro-modernization candidate Norman Swanscombe is up against traditionalist conservation candidate Major David Walsh who accuses Swancsombe of having a hidden agenda. Two others in the village will die however before Barnaby gets to the bottom of it all.—garykmcd
- In the picturesque village of Great Pelfe, Maureen Stubbs of the Midsomer Conservation Society wildly opposes entrepreneur and municipal council candidate Norman Swanscombe's recent new home, called Swanscombe House, a highlight of an open garden day, scolded at his reception, like councilor James Otley and architect James Otley, as up measure for the larger Pelfham development project at the pristine outskirts. The next night, she's fatally stabbed with a broken bottle there again, but also found the vandal and probably the robber active in the area. The dodgy contractor Geoff Rogers had an adulterous affair with the town planning official and later dies from electric sabotage of the 'domotics' door on Norman's home. Barnaby and Jones also look at the other seat candidate, former overseas conflict manager Major David Walsh, whom Maureen's successor convinces to keep accusing of corruption even now the evidence has been stolen from her home.—KGF Vissers
